


{"id":13389,"date":"2023-07-24T11:09:36","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T05:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13389"},"modified":"2025-04-02T03:58:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T22:28:50","slug":"cannabis-medicine-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cannabis-medicine-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Cannabis Medicine Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Cannabis Medicine Project<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2018Cannabis Research Project\u2019 of CSIR-IIIM Jammu is a first of its kind in India initiated under the leadership of Science &amp; Technology Ministry in Private Public Partnership with a Canadian firm<\/strong>, which has a great potential to put substance of abuse for the good of mankind especially for patients suffering from neuropathies, cancer and epilepsy, malignancies.<\/li>\n<li>This project of CSIR-IIIM is also important from the perspective of Atma- Nirbhar Bharat as it will be able to <strong>produce export quality drugs meant for different kinds of neuropathies, diabetic pains etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This project will <strong>explore the therapeutic properties of Cannabis<\/strong>, a plant which is otherwise prohibited and known for abuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Cannabis Cultivation:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cannabis, weed, pot, and marijuana all refer to the same group of plants known for their <strong>relaxing and calming effects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cannabis contains<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5345356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <strong>at least 120 trusted Source<\/strong><\/a><strong> active ingredients<\/strong>, or cannabinoids. The most abundant ones are <strong>cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Cannabidiol (CBD) &#8211; This is a psychoactive cannabinoid, yet it\u2019s <strong>non-intoxicating and non-euphoric.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>THC- <\/strong>This is the <strong>main psychoactive compound<\/strong> in cannabis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal provisions in India:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>central law<\/strong> that deals with cannabis is the <strong>Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The NDPS Act <strong>prohibits the sale and production of cannabis resin and flowers<\/strong>, but the use of leaves and seeds of the cannabis plant is permitted.<\/li>\n<li>However, different <strong>states have their own laws<\/strong> relating to the consumption, possession, sale or purchase of it.<\/li>\n<li>States like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have started making the policy and rules for the use of Cannabis for scientific purposes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine(CSIR-IIIM):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>oldest scientific research institute<\/strong> in India with a history of discovering mint way back in 1960s, the centre <strong>of purple revolution <\/strong>and now the Cannabis Research Project.<\/li>\n<li>It was first established as a research and production centre <strong>in 1941<\/strong> but later taken over by the Council of Scientific &amp; Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1957.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate: <\/strong>To discover <strong>new drugs and therapeutic approaches from Natural Products<\/strong>, both of plant and microbial origin, enabled by biotechnology, to develop technologies, drugs and products of high value for the <strong>national and international markets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What are neuropathies?<\/h3>\n<p>Neuropathies are disorders that affect the nerves.
