justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the major <\/span><b>east-flowing peninsular rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the states of<\/span><b> Chhattisgarh and Odisha.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>third-largest peninsular river after the Godavari and Krishna.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>originates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the <\/span><b>Sihawa Hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Dhamtari district, <\/span><b>Chhattisgarh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a collection of small streams in the <\/span><b>Dandakaranya foothills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and initially flows northward for about 100 km before turning eastward into the plains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before <\/span><b>joining the Bay of Bengal at False Point through several channels near<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the major seaport town of <\/span><b>Paradip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the river <\/span><b>enters the plains of Odisha near Cuttack <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and forms a delta.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Close to one of its mouths <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the famous pilgrimage site of <\/span><b>Puri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Farther up the coast is Konark<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the sun.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Total Length: 860 km\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is <\/span><b>bounded <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the north by<\/span><b> the Central India hills, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the south and east by the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eastern-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eastern Ghats<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in the west by the <\/span><b>Maikal hill range.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mahanadi <\/span><b>basin extends<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the states of<\/span><b> Chhattisgarh and Odisha <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and comparatively smaller portions of <\/span><b>Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:
