{"id":13714,"date":"2024-03-11T06:22:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T00:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13714"},"modified":"2025-10-11T11:13:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T05:43:20","slug":"what-is-samudrayaan-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-samudrayaan-project\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Samudrayaan Project?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Samudrayaan Mission<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is\u00a0India\u2019s first manned mission to\u00a0explore the deep ocean.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0aimed to develop a self-propelled manned submersible to\u00a0carry three human beings to a\u00a0water depth of 6,000 meters in the ocean with a suite of scientific sensors and tools\u00a0for deep ocean exploration.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is designed to\u00a0study the deep ocean resources and\u00a0conduct biodiversity assessments as well.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The mission\u00a0will not disturb the ecosystem as the submersible is used\u00a0solely for exploration purposes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project is\u00a0part of the larger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/deep-ocean-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Deep Ocean Mission<\/u><\/a>, which supports the Central Government\u2019s Blue Economy policy.<\/li>\n<li>Nodal Ministry:\u00a0Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is MATSYA 6000?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0manned submersible\u00a0vehicle developed by the\u00a0National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was developed\u00a0under the Samudrayaan mission to facilitate humans in the deep ocean in exploring mineral resources.<\/li>\n<li>It has an\u00a0endurance of 12 hours of operational period and\u00a096 hours in case of emergency.<\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0allow scientific personnel to observe and understand\u00a0unexplored deep-sea areas by direct interventions. Further, it will enhance the capability for deep-sea man-rated vehicle development.<\/li>\n<li>Expected to be launched in 2024-25, it would\u00a0make India only one among six countries\u00a0(US, Russia, Japan, France, and China) to\u00a0have piloted a crewed under-sea expedition beyond 5,000 metres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about Deep Ocean Mission<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a mission-mode project to\u00a0support the Blue Economy Initiatives of the Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>It has been launched as a\u00a0Central Sector Scheme of Ministry of Earth Sciences.<\/li>\n<li>It is a high-level,\u00a0multi-ministerial, multi-disciplinary programme for a better\u00a0understanding of the deep sea living and non-living resources\u00a0of the\u00a0Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to develop technologies to harness living and non-living resources from the deep oceans.<\/li>\n<li>The estimated cost of the Mission will be 4077 crores for a\u00a0period of 5 years (2021-26), to be implemented in a phase-wise manner.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Mission consists\u00a0of six major components:\n<ul>\n<li>Development of\u00a0Technologies for Deep Sea Mining and\u00a0Manned Submersible and Underwater Robotics;<\/li>\n<li>Development of\u00a0Ocean Climate Change Advisory Services;<\/li>\n<li>Technological innovations for exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity;<\/li>\n<li>Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration;<\/li>\n<li>Energy and freshwater from the Ocean;<\/li>\n<li>Advanced\u00a0Marine Station for Ocean Biology;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT)?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>NIOT was established in November 1993 as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. NIOT is managed by a Governing Council and the Director is the head of the Institute.
