{"id":13841,"date":"2026-06-14T14:37:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T09:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13841"},"modified":"2026-06-15T18:15:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T12:45:33","slug":"national-pharmaceutical-pricing-authority-nppa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-pharmaceutical-pricing-authority-nppa\/","title":{"rendered":"National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) raised ceiling rates for two key platinum-based cancer drugs \u200bby 50% after a surge in raw material costs triggered \u200cwidespread shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>independent regulator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>pricing of drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to ensure availability and accessibility of medicines at affordable prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was constituted in 1997 under the <\/span><b>Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), Ministry of Chemicals &amp; Fertilizers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functions of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>implement and enforce the provisions of the Drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Prices Control) Order in accordance with the powers delegated to it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>monitor the availability of drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, identify shortages, if any, and to take remedial steps.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>collect\/ maintain data on production,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exports and imports, market share of individual companies, profitability of companies etc, for bulk drugs and formulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To recruit\/ appoint the officers and other staff members of the Authority, as per rules and procedures laid down by the Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>render advice to the Central Government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on changes\/ revisions in the drug policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To render assistance to the Central Government in the parliamentary matters relating to drug pricing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>fix and revising drug prices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as per the provisions of the <\/span><b>Drugs Prices Control Order (DPCO),<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPPA provides <\/span><b>ceiling price to all drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notified under <\/span><b>Schedule-I of DPCO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and so far<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Industry\/price-cap-on-cancer-drugs-increase-to-tackle-shortage\/article71092419.ece\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority regulates drug prices and ensures the availability of affordable medicines in India.
