Today, <strong>Christianity<\/strong> (mainly Baptist and Presbyterian) is the <strong>dominant religion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have <strong>typical Tibeto-Burman features<\/strong> and are generally of short-stature with straight black hair and dark brown eyes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Hmar Tribe<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Hmar tribe, also called <strong>Mhar or Mar<\/strong>, are the dwellers of the <strong>northeastern part of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The word &#8220;Hmar&#8221; literally means &#8220;north&#8221;.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They live in the northeastern states of <strong>Manipur, Assam, Mizoram, Megalaya, and Tripura<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They belonged to the<strong> Chin-Kuki Mizo group<\/strong> of tribes. They are of <strong>Mongoloid stock<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Hmar folk songs reveal that these people <strong>migrated from Sinlung<\/strong>, which is assumed to be i<strong>n China.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are recognised as <strong>Scheduled Tribe<\/strong> under the Constitution of India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Language<\/strong>: The <strong>Hmar language<\/strong> belongs to the <strong>Kuki-Chin group of Tibeto-Burman <\/strong>stock of the great <strong>Tibeto-Chinese family <\/strong>of languages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Occupation<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The majority of the Hmars were <strong>cultivators<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Slash-and-burn<\/strong> system of agricultural practices is still at large by the Hmar Tribe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religion and Beliefs: <\/strong>Traditionally, they followed animistic and indigenous beliefs, but over time, <strong>many have converted to Christianity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Clans<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The Hmar society is based on a clan<strong> system.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Each clan<\/strong> had a <strong>dialect of its own<\/strong>, though nowadays a common dialect used by the Hmar people was developed by Christian missionaries.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>chief of the village council<\/strong> is called &#8220;<strong>Lal<\/strong>&#8220;.
