{"id":13961,"date":"2026-07-19T13:41:18","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T08:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13961"},"modified":"2026-07-21T10:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T05:21:10","slug":"legionnaires-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/legionnaires-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Legionnaires&#8217; Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Legionnaires&#8217; Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legionnaires&#8217; disease outbreak in New York City recently claimed its first life, with at least 67 people falling ill and dozens needing hospital care. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Legionnaires&#8217; Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>severe form of a lung infection (pneumonia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a <\/span><b>bacterium <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known as <\/span><b>legionella<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name comes from a <\/span><b>1976 outbreak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among <\/span><b>people attending <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an <\/span><b>American Legion convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Philadelphia, where the disease was<\/span><b> first identified.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legionella can <\/span><b>also cause Pontiac fever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a <\/span><b>milder, flu-like illness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that doesn&#8217;t infect your lungs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Legionnaires&#8217; Disease <\/b><b>Transmission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legionella is<\/span><b> found naturally in freshwater, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as lakes and rivers. It can also be <\/span><b>found in soil.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But people usually only<\/span><b> get sick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from it <\/span><b>when it grows and spreads <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><b> man-made water systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems can include <\/span><b>hot tubs, fountain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong>, and the <\/span><b>plumbing systems of large buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as hotels or nursing homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people catch Legionnaires\u2019 disease by <\/span><b>breathing in mist or small drops of water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contain the bacteria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually <\/span><b>can\u2019t get infected by drinking water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contains the bacteria <\/span><b>unless you aspirate it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (accidentally breathe the water into your lungs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>not contagious,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning it does not spread from person to person.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and people who smoke have a higher risk of getting Legionnaires\u2019 disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Legionnaires&#8217; Disease <\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It causes <\/span><b>pneumonia-like symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that start two to 14 days after exposure to Legionella.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients usually present with <strong>f<\/strong><\/span><b>ever, cough, shortness of breath,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tiredness, headache, muscle pain, and may have <\/span><b>gastrointestinal symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>severe cases, neurological symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g., <\/span><b>confusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and<\/span><b> respiratory failure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may occur, and<\/span><b> some cases <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may result in <\/span><b>death<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Legionnaires&#8217; Disease <\/b><b>Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating right away with <\/span><b>antibiotics most often cures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Legionnaires\u2019 disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some people still have problems after treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there is<\/span><b> no <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\">vaccine<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available for LD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etvbharat.com\/amp\/en\/health\/legionnaires-disease-all-you-need-to-know-enn26071802107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ETVB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legionnaires&#8217; Disease is a severe form of a lung infection (pneumonia) caused by a bacterium known as legionella.
