concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pong Dam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pong Dam, also known as the <\/span><b>Beas Dam,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><b>earth-fill embankment dam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constructed on the <\/span><b>river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beas in the wetland of Shivalik hills in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>construction <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the dam began in the year 1961 and was <\/span><b>completed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1974, and at that time it was known as the<\/span><b> tallest of its type in the country.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The height of this dam is close to 133 m, while the width at the bottom remains 610 m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was constructed for <\/span><b>generating hydroelectricity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and for irrigation purposes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam\u2019s spillway is controlled by six radial gates affixed on the southern side of it. <\/span><b>The <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">base of the dam <\/span><b>contains a powerhouse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction of a dam created an <\/span><b>artificial lake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called the<\/span><b> Maharana Pratap Sagar, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after the great ruler of Mewar.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known widely as the <\/span><b>Pong Reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the Pong Dam Lake, it was <\/span><b>declared <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><b> bird sanctuary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1983 due to its <\/span><b>waterfowl diversity.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, the reservoir emerged as a sanctuary for migratory birds, leading to its designation as a <\/span><b>Ramsar Wetland Site <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2002.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is home to several species of avifauna, some of which include Barheaded Geese, Red-neck Grebe, northern lapwing, common teal, spot-billed duck, Eurasian coot, black stork, egrests, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sprawling over an area of over 240 sq.km., the lake is also an <\/span><b>important fish reservoir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that acts as a fish breeding ground for commercial purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/dhauladhar-range\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dhauladhar<\/a> mountains ensconce the Pong Dam<\/b> <b>lake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from all sides.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the lake is an <\/span><b>extension of the perennial Beas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> river <\/span><b>that flows from the Rohtang Pass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it c<\/span><b>ontains water throughout the
