


{"id":14065,"date":"2023-08-17T07:47:54","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T02:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14065"},"modified":"2025-04-02T09:38:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T04:08:14","slug":"employees-state-insurance-esi-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/employees-state-insurance-esi-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Employees State Insurance (ESI) Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Employees State Insurance (ESI) Scheme<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>social security scheme<\/strong> <strong>offered<\/strong> by the Government of India <strong>as per the Employees&#8217; State Insurance Act, 1948.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>administered by a statutory corporate body<\/strong> called the <strong>Employees&#8217; State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The scheme <strong>provides protection to employees against disablement\/death<\/strong> <strong>due to employment injury, sickness, and maternity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Applicability<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The ESI Scheme <strong>applies to factories and other establishment&#8217;s<\/strong> viz. Road Transport, Hotels, Restaurants, Cinemas, Newspaper, Shops, and Educational\/Medical Institutions <strong>wherein 10 or more persons are employed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>However, in <strong>some States threshold limit<\/strong> for coverage of establishments <strong>is still 20.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>employer&#8217;s legal responsibility to register their factory<\/strong>\/ establishment under the ESI Act <strong>within 15 days of its applicability to them.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wage Limit<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The existing <strong>wage limit for coverage under the Act is Rs.21,000\/- per month<\/strong> (<strong>Rs.25000\/- per month in the case of Persons with Disability<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>employer&#8217;s responsibility to enroll eligible employees<\/strong> in the ESI program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How are contributions made?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This is a <strong>self-financing scheme<\/strong>, where the <strong>employees and the employers make regular monthly contributions<\/strong> to the scheme <strong>at a certain percentage of their wages.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As of now, <strong>covered employees contribute 0.75% of the wages<\/strong>, whereas the <strong>employers contribute 3.25% of the wages<\/strong>, <strong>payable to their employees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employees earning less than Rs. 137\/-<\/strong> a day as daily wages <strong>are exempted<\/strong> from payment of their share of contribution.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>State Governments<\/strong>, as per provisions of the Act, <strong>contribute 1\/8th of the expenditure of medical benefits <\/strong>within a per capita ceiling of Rs. 1500\/- per Insured Person per annum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The main benefits provided under ESI Scheme are:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sickness Benefit:<\/strong> <strong>During medical leave<\/strong>, the scheme offers cash flow during the said period. The <strong>worker can avail 70% of the daily wage for a maximum of 91 days.<\/strong> This can be <strong>availed in two consecutive periods<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disablement Benefit<\/strong>: In case of <strong>temporary disablement<\/strong> of the worker, they are <strong>eligible for a monthly wage of 90% until they recover<\/strong>. In the <strong>case of permanent disability<\/strong>, <strong>90% of the monthly wage can be availed for the entire life<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dependants\u2019 Benefit<\/strong>: Paid at the rate of <strong>90% of wage in the form of monthly payment to the dependants of a deceased Insured person <\/strong>in cases where death occurs due to employment injury or occupational hazards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maternity Benefit:<\/strong> The beneficiary can a<strong>vail 100% of the daily wages for up to 26 weeks, <\/strong>which can be <strong>extended to a further one month<\/strong> based on the medical advice. <strong>In the case of miscarriage, the benefit is 6 weeks<\/strong>, while in the <strong>case of adoption it is 12 weeks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Medical Benefit<\/strong>: Under the scheme, the i<strong>nsured\u2019s medical expenses are covered through affordable and reasonable healthcare facilities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Besides the above, <strong>other benefits<\/strong> being provided to the beneficiaries <strong>are Confinement Expenses, Funeral Expenses, Vocational Rehabilitation<\/strong>, Physical Rehabilitation, Unemployment Allowance (RGSKY) and Skill Upgradation Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employee&#8217;s insurance number remains the sam<\/strong>e as long as he or she remains within the ESIC wage limit. <strong>Changing jobs will not affect an employee&#8217;s insurance status<\/strong>, and his or her <strong>insurance number will remain the same<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana (RGSKY)?<\/h3>\n<p>The Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana (RGSKY) introduced by the Employees\u2019 State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) w.e.f. 01.04.2005 provides unemployment allowance to the Insured Person (IP).
