{"id":14293,"date":"2023-09-06T01:25:37","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T19:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14293"},"modified":"2025-04-02T18:38:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T13:08:14","slug":"kuiper-belt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kuiper-belt\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Kuiper Belt?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Kuiper Belt<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Kuiper belt,\u00a0<strong>also called the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt,<\/strong> is a\u00a0<strong>flat ring of small icy bodies that revolve around the Sun beyond the orbit of the planet Neptune.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is<strong> named after Gerard Kuipe<\/strong>r, a Dutch-American astronomer\u00a0<strong>who hypothesized the existence of such a region in the 1950s.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There\u00a0<strong>are millions of these icy objects, collectively referred to as Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) or trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs)<\/strong>, in this belt.<\/li>\n<li>The Kuiper Belt is a\u00a0<strong>region of leftovers from the solar system&#8217;s early history.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is thought to be the\u00a0<strong>source of most of the observed short-period comets,<\/strong> particularly those that orbit the Sun in less than 20 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition<\/strong>: The Kuiper Belt is\u00a0<strong>primarily composed of small icy bodies, such as dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pluto:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pluto<\/strong>, once considered the ninth planet in our solar system,<strong> is one of the most well-known Kuiper Belt objects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU)\u00a0<strong>reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, partly because of its location within the Kuiper Belt.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Comet?<\/h3>\n<p>Comets are large objects made of dust and ice that orbit the Sun.
