{"id":14337,"date":"2026-03-07T12:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T07:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14337"},"modified":"2026-03-07T13:52:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T08:22:28","slug":"sambar-deer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sambar-deer\/","title":{"rendered":"Sambar Deer"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sambar Deer Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wildlife Wing of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department recently recorded the presence of sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) in high-altitude protected areas of Chamba district through camera traps for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sambar Deer<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>large deer native to the Indian Subcontinent, southern China and Southeast Asia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Name: Rusa unicolor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Several races<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sambar are recognized, among them the <\/span><b>large Indian sambar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>smaller Malayan sambar.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sambar Deer <\/b><b>Habitat and Distribution<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are native to <\/span><b>India, Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ceylon, Sri Lanka, Burma, the Philippines, <\/span><b>southern China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Taiwan, Borneo, <\/span><b>Malaysia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Sumatra, and Java.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sambars inhabit both<\/span><b> gently sloping and steep forested hillsides.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They reside <\/span><b>preferably near cultivated areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as gardens and plantations, in order to acquire food, but are <\/span><b>also found in thick forests, swamp forests, and open scrub.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sambar Deer <\/b><b>Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>large<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, relatively <\/span><b>long-tailed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deer, it stands 1.2\u20131.4 m (47\u201355 inches) at the shoulder.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>largest oriental deer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with some adult males reaching 550 kg in weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its body is covered with a <\/span><b>hairy coat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colored <\/span><b>yellowish brown to dark gray.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>underside <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is usually <\/span><b>dark or chestnut in color.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>hairs are generally long <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>more so around the neck particularly in males.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a <\/span><b>long black tail. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> underside of this tail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually <\/span><b>white <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in color.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Males have antlers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and tend to be <\/span><b>heavier and darker. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their antlers can grow up to 42 inches long and have <\/span><b>3 or 4 tines (points)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are<\/span><b> shed periodically.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sambar Deer <\/b><b>Conservation Status<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is classified as &#8216;<b>Vulnerable<\/b>&#8216; under the IUSN Red List<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/himachal\/sambar-spotted-at-high-altitudes-in-chamba-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sambar Deer is a large deer native to the Indian Subcontinent, southern China and Southeast Asia.
