


{"id":14397,"date":"2023-08-26T11:08:40","date_gmt":"2023-08-26T05:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14397"},"modified":"2025-04-02T20:18:59","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:48:59","slug":"what-is-bidriware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-bidriware\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Bidriware?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Bidriware:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>form of metal handicraft<\/strong> that <strong>has Persian influences<\/strong> and has been<strong> made for centuries by artisans from Karnataka\u2019s Bidar district.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is renowned for its<strong> intricate, handcrafted designs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The origin of <strong>Bidriware<\/strong> as a craft is <strong>attributed mostly to the Bahamani Sultans<\/strong> who <strong>ruled the region during the 14th and 15th centuries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>first brought to India by the noted Sufi Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti <\/strong>in <strong>the form of utensils.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The a<strong>rt form developed <\/strong>in the kingdom <strong>was a mix of Turkish, Persian and Arabic influences, which were intermingled with the local styles,<\/strong> and thus a unique style of its own was born.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This native art form <strong>has obtained a Geographical Indications (GI) registry.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bidar in Karnataka and Hyderabad in Telangana<\/strong> are the most <strong>vibrant centers of Bidriware.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How is Bidriware made?\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Bidri Ware is <strong>manufactured from an alloy of copper and zinc<\/strong> (in the ratio 1:16) <strong>by casting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>zinc content gives the alloy a deep black colour.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The c<strong>raftsman uses small chisels to engrave the design over the freehand etching.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fine wire or flattened strips of pure silver are then carefully hammered into these grooves.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A s<strong>pecial variety of soil, <\/strong>which is<strong> available only in <\/strong>the unlit portions of t<strong>he Bidar fort, is used for the final blackening process. <\/strong>It is <strong>mixed with ammonium chloride<\/strong> <strong>and water to produce a paste, <\/strong>which is then <strong>rubbed onto a heated Bidri surface.<\/strong> The p<strong>aste selectively darkens the body while it has no effect on the silver inlay.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>product then undergoes a process called buffing to smoothen the surface.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?<\/h3>\n<p>A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. In India, GI tags are issued as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,1999.
