


{"id":14541,"date":"2025-07-04T12:10:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T06:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14541"},"modified":"2025-07-04T15:14:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T09:44:33","slug":"grand-ethiopian-renaissance-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/grand-ethiopian-renaissance-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethiopia&#8217;s Prime Minister recently said the multi-billion-dollar Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile that has long worried neighbouring countries is complete and will be officially inaugurated in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GERD, <\/span><b>formerly known as the Millennium Dam,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is situated in the <\/span><b>Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> near the border with Sudan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located<\/span><b> on the Blue Nile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the <\/span><b>main tributaries of the Nile <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Capacity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>6.45 Gigawatts,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is the <\/span><b>largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Construction Started: April 2011<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is <\/span><b>owned by Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Dispute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><b> Egypt and Sudan<\/b> <b>fear <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the massive $4.2bn <\/span><b>GERD will severely reduce the share of Nile water they receive a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd have <\/span><b>repeatedly asked Ethiopia to stop filling it <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until they have all reached agreement on how it should work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam <\/b><b>Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity-type dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comprising <\/span><b>two power stations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three spillways, and a <\/span><b>saddle dam.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main dam is 145 m high and 1,780 m long.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam <\/span><b>forms a reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covering 1,875 sq.km, which can hold up to 74 billion cubic metres of water. The GERD <\/span><b>reservoir is in a deep gorge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so its surface area is relatively small compared to its volume.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The saddle dam supporting the main dam is 4,800 m long and 45 m high.
