Patel has been elected as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 term.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b> <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>independent judicial body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> established by the 1982 <\/span><b>United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Headquarter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hamburg, Germany.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Composition<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tribunal is composed of <\/span><b>21 independent members.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members elected by secret ballot by the States Parties to the Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each State Party <\/span><b>may nominate up to two candidates.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members are <\/span><b>elected for nine years<\/b> <b>and may be re-elected;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the terms of one third of the members expire every three years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Eligibility of members:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Candidates from among persons enjoying the highest reputation for fairness and integrity and of <\/span><b>recognized competence in the field of the law of the sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Jurisdiction of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has jurisdiction over <\/span><b>any dispute concerning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> interpretation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or application of the Convention, and over all matters specifically provided for in any other agreement which confers jurisdiction on the Tribunal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disputes relating to the Convention may <\/span><b>concern the delimitation of maritime zones,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> navigation, <\/span><b>conservation and management of the living resources of the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, protection and preservation of the marine environment and marine scientific research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tribunal is <\/span><b>open to States Parties to the Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (i.e. States and international organisations which are parties to the Convention).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <\/span><b>open to entities other than States Parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i.e., States or intergovernmental organisations which are not parties to the Convention, and to state enterprises and private entities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsonair.gov.in\/indias-professor-bimal-n-patel-secures-judgeship-at-international-tribunal-for-the-law-of-the-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NOA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is an independent judicial body established under the 1982 UNCLOS.
