Neighboring countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, and Nepal has enhanced border screening and testing for travelers coming from affected countries.<\/p>\n<h2><b>About Nipah Virus<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nipah virus (NiV) is a <\/span><b>zoonotic virus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(it is transmitted from animals to humans) and can <\/span><b>also<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be <\/span><b>transmitted through contaminated food <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>directly between people.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Fruit bats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Pteropodidae family are the <\/span><b>natural hosts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Nipah virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In infected people, it causes a <\/span><b>range of illnesses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><b>asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory illness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>fatal encephalitis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus can also cause <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and involved <\/span><b>pig farmers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the village of <\/span><b>Sungai Nipah (Malaysia).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, sporadic outbreaks have been documented in Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, and Singapore.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NiV infection is one of the <\/span><b>priority diseases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the World Health Organization (<\/span><b>WHO) R&amp;D Blueprint<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of its<\/span><b> epidemic or pandemic potential.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Nipah Virus Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infected people initially develop symptoms including <\/span><b>fever, headaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, myalgia <\/span><b>(muscle pain), vomiting <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>sore throat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be <\/span><b>followed by dizziness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people can also experience atypical pneumonia and <\/span><b>severe respiratory problems,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><b>acute respiratory distress.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Encephalitis and seizures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur in <\/span><b>severe
