{"id":14585,"date":"2024-03-26T12:32:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T07:02:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14585"},"modified":"2025-04-02T21:35:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:05:15","slug":"digital-markets-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/digital-markets-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Markets Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Digital Markets Act (DMA)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0EU\u2019s law to make the markets in the digital sector fairer and more contestable.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to create a\u00a0safer internet, empower citizens,\u00a0enhance consumer protections, and foster higher-quality digital services.<\/li>\n<li>In order to do so, the\u00a0DMA establishes a set of\u00a0clearly defined objective criteria to identify \u201cgatekeepers\u201d.\n<ul>\n<li>Gatekeepers\u00a0are large digital platforms\u00a0providing so-called core platform services, such as online search engines, app stores, and messenger services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Gatekeepers will\u00a0have to comply with the do\u2019s (i.e., obligations)\u00a0and don\u2019ts (i.e., prohibitions)\u00a0listed in the DMA.<\/li>\n<li>The DMA is one of the first regulatory tools to comprehensively regulate the gatekeeper power of the largest digital companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Key Measures:\n<ul>\n<li>Tighter\u00a0restrictions on how digital gatekeepers can use people\u2019s data\u2014users must give their explicit consent for their activities to be tracked for advertising purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Messaging services and social media platforms\u00a0teaming up and sharing users. This could mean, for example, Meta-owned WhatsApp users being able to send messages directly to a completely different messaging service, such as Telegram.<\/li>\n<li>Presenting users with the\u00a0option to uninstall preloaded applications on devices.<\/li>\n<li>Gatekeepers are banned from ranking\u00a0their own products or services higher than others in online searches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0DMA complements, but\u00a0does not change EU competition rules, which continue to apply fully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the European Union (EU)?<\/h3>\n<p>The EU is a political and economic union of 27 member states located primarily in Europe. The EU was established by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993. The main goal of the EU is to promote cooperation and integration among its member states in order to enhance economic and political stability in Europe. The EU has its own currency, the Euro, which is used by 19 of the member states.
