In 1959 it got the status of a sanctuary <\/span><b>mainly to protect the Indian Bison and Royal Bengal Tiger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which were facing the threat of extinction.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The altitude varies from 500 ft. at the southern area near Sukna and rises up to 4,300ft towards the northern area near a place called Latpanchar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It varies mainly from<\/span><b> riverine forests to dense mixed-wet forest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s due to the difference in altitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Flora:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the home of 300 different kinds of plantations, but the prominent ones are <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sal-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sal<\/a>, Simul, Sisco, and Khair.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the other trees include Lali, Jamur, Gamar, Bamboos, Fern, Orchids, Fern, Teak, Udal, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important mammalian species include Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian elephants, Indian bison, spotted deer, barking deer, <\/span><b>many species of lesser cat,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Himalayan black bear, leopard including clouded leopard and many other smaller animals like rare mountain goat (Serow), porcupines, snakes, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the plain areas of the lower region, you will get to see several <\/span><b>elephants migrated from Nepal, Assam,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other forests of West Bengal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are about 243 avian species found here, including the <\/span><b>Himalayan pied hornbill,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> peacock, peafowl, fouls, king fisher, drongo, robin, fly catchers, woodpeckers and others .\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also a haven for the <\/span><b>migratory birds, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which arrive here from <\/span><b>Central Asia. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/kolkata\/bengal-shrinks-mahananda-sanctuary-eco-sensitive-zone-from-5km-to-1km\/articleshow\/132420004.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TOI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.
