{"id":14706,"date":"2023-09-14T03:46:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T22:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14706"},"modified":"2025-04-02T22:25:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:55:51","slug":"ehd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ehd\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease (EHD)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease (EHD):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0<strong>insect-born disease caused by a virus<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>affecting wild and domestic ruminant species.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has become an emerging disease in cattle, and was\u00a0<strong>added to the World Organisation of Animal Health list of notifiable diseases in May 2008.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>disease of animals, not humans<\/strong>, so there are\u00a0<strong>no human or public health issues.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>causative agent<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV),<\/strong> belongs to the Orbivirus genus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>EHDV is transmitted<\/strong> between ruminant hosts\u00a0<strong>by Culicoides midges, tiny biting flies commonly known as \u201cno-see-ums<\/strong>\u201d or gnats that are smaller than mosquitoes and other flies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clinical signs:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Fever, weakness, lack of appetite, more saliva than usual<\/strong>, difficulty swallowing,\u00a0<strong>skin rash<\/strong> on the udder,\u00a0<strong>bleeding<\/strong> (skin and internal tissues),\u00a0<strong>swollen red skin near hooves,<\/strong> swollen lining of the mouth, mouth ulcers,\u00a0<strong>difficulty breathing and sudden death (particularly in deer).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>There is no treatment for HD\u00a0<\/strong>in wildlife populations, and\u00a0<strong>no commercially available vaccine\u00a0<\/strong>to protect against EHD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Virus?<\/h3>\n<p>Viruses are microscopic organisms that can infect hosts, like humans, plants or animals. They\u2019re a small piece of genetic information (DNA or RNA) inside of a protective shell (capsid). Some viruses also have an envelope. Viruses can\u2019t reproduce without a host.
