


{"id":14738,"date":"2023-09-15T01:02:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T19:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14738"},"modified":"2025-04-02T22:37:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T17:07:45","slug":"who-was-sir-m-visvesvaraya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/who-was-sir-m-visvesvaraya\/","title":{"rendered":"Who was Sir M Visvesvaraya?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Sir M Visvesvaraya<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, widely known as Sir MV, <strong>was a distinguished engineer<\/strong>, <strong>statesman, and scholar<\/strong> who <strong>held the position of Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>known as the father of Modern Mysore<\/strong> for his outstanding contribution to society.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birth<\/strong>: He was born on <strong>15th September 1861<\/strong> in Muddenahalli village <strong>in Karnataka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education<\/strong>: He completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Madras and completed <strong>civil engineering from the College of Science in Pune.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Contributions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>He was the <strong>chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He <strong>designed and patented automatic water floodgates in 1903<\/strong>, which were <strong>first installed at the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1917, Visvesvaraya established Government Engineering College in Bengaluru,<\/strong> which was <strong>later named University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering<\/strong> in his honour.<\/li>\n<li>He was a <strong>renowned precursor of economic planning <\/strong>in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Awards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In 1955<\/strong>, the Government of India <strong>honoured him with thehighest civilian honour \u2014 Bharat Ratna <\/strong>for his numerous industrial, economic and social projects.<\/li>\n<li>He was also <strong>conferred the British knighthood by King George V, earning the title &#8220;Sir.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Key Facts about Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is <strong>located below the confluence of river Kaveri with its tributaries, Hemavati and Lakshmana Tirth<\/strong>a, in the district of Mandya <strong>in Karnataka<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a type of <strong>gravity dam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Usage<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The water from the Dam is used for <strong>irrigation in Mysore and Mandya<\/strong> and is the <strong>main source of drinking water for Mysore, Mandya and Bengaluru city<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It also ensures <strong>power supply to the Shivanasamudra hydroelectric power station<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>water released from this dam flows into<\/strong> the state of <strong>Tamil Nadu and is stored in the Mettur dam <\/strong>in the Salem district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>History<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The dam was <strong>constructed during the rule o<\/strong>f the Maharaja of Mysore, <strong>Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, and it was named in his honour<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The construction of the KRS Dam <strong>began in 1911 and it was completed in 1931.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The dam was <strong>designed by Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a famous Indian engineer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>built using a mixture of surki mortar and limestone.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0It is <strong>2,621 meters (8,600 ft) long<\/strong> and <strong>40 meters (130 ft) high.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Its <strong>reservoir is about 130 Sq.
