


{"id":14783,"date":"2024-05-29T09:52:07","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T04:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14783"},"modified":"2025-10-13T12:00:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T06:30:52","slug":"bhabha-atomic-research-centre-barc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bhabha-atomic-research-centre-barc\/","title":{"rendered":"Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC):<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>India\u2019s premier nuclear research facility<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is headquartered in <strong>Trombay, Mumbai<\/strong>, Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It operates under the <strong>Department of Atomic Energy<\/strong>, which is <strong>directly overseen by<\/strong> the <strong>Prime Minister<\/strong> of India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>multi-disciplinary research centre<\/strong> with extensive infrastructure for advanced research and development <strong>covering<\/strong> the <strong>entire spectrum nuclear science and engineering<\/strong> and related areas.<\/li>\n<li>BARC is the <strong>research backbone of<\/strong> the <strong>Nuclear Power Corporation of India<\/strong> (NPCIL), which currently <strong>operates all <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/nuclear-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear power<\/a><strong> reactors in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/homi-bhabha\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha<\/a> <strong>conceived<\/strong> the <strong>nuclear program in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Bhabha <strong>established<\/strong> the <strong>Tata Institute of Fundamental Research<\/strong> (TIFR) to carry out nuclear science research <strong>in 1945.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To intensify the effort to exploit nuclear energy for the benefit of the nation, Dr. Bhabha <strong>established the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET<\/strong>), in January 1954 for a multidisciplinary research program essential <strong>for the ambitious nuclear program of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>After the death of Bhabha<\/strong> in 1966, <strong>AEET was renamed<\/strong> Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (<strong>BARC<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Functions:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is engaged in <strong>research<\/strong> with the objective of generating knowledge and techniques <strong>for nuclear power production<\/strong>, the advancement of <strong>nuclear science<\/strong>, the <strong>use of radioisotopes in industry<\/strong>, <strong>health, and agriculture,<\/strong> and research in frontier areas of science and technology.<\/li>\n<li>It is responsible for the <strong>design and development of nuclear reactors<\/strong>, <strong>fuel cycle technologies, radiation protection<\/strong>, and <strong>safety systems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>BARC also plays an important role in <strong>nuclear education and training<\/strong>. It offers various training programs for scientists, engineers, and technicians in the areas of nuclear science and technology.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are electrolysers?<\/h3>\n<p>Electrolysers, which use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, are a critical technology for producing low-emission hydrogen from renewable or nuclear electricity. Like fuel cells, electrolyzers consist of an anode and a cathode separated by an electrolyte.
