India\u2019s premier nuclear research facility.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is headquartered in <\/span><b>Trombay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mumbai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Maharashtra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It operates under the<\/span><b> Department of Atomic Energy, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is directly <\/span><b>overseen by the Prime Minister <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>statutory framework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> governing its activities is the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/atomic-energy-act-1962\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atomic Energy Act, 1962<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which vests in the <\/span><b>central government exclusive control over atomic minerals, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fissile material, and nuclear research, superseding the earlier Atomic Energy Act of 1948.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-disciplinary research centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with extensive infrastructure for advanced research and development covering the <\/span><b>entire spectrum of nuclear science and engineering and related areas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BARC is the<\/span><b> research backbone of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which<\/span><b> currently operates all nuclear power reactors in India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha conceived<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>nuclear program in India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dr. Bhabha established the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to carry out nuclear science research in <\/span><b>1945<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bhabha <\/span><b>established the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January <\/span><b>1954 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a multidisciplinary research program essential for the ambitious nuclear program of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>After the death of Bhabha in 1966, AEET<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><b>renamed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (<\/span><b>BARC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Functions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is engaged in <\/span><b>research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the objective of generating knowledge and techniques for <\/span><b>nuclear power production,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the advancement of<\/span><b> nuclear science, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>use of radioisotopes in industry, health, and agriculture, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>research in frontier areas of science and technology.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is responsible for the <\/span><b>design and development of nuclear reactors, fuel cycle technologies,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> radiation protection, and safety systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BARC also plays an important role in <\/span><b>nuclear education and training.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It offers various training programs for scientists, engineers, and technicians in the areas of
