


{"id":14799,"date":"2023-09-17T02:01:21","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T20:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14799"},"modified":"2025-10-14T11:43:48","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:13:48","slug":"critical-raw-materials-act-crm-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/critical-raw-materials-act-crm-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Critical raw materials (CRMs) <strong>are raw materials of high economic importance for the EU<\/strong>, <strong>with a high risk of supply disruption<\/strong> due to their concentration of sources and lack of good, affordable substitutes.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>CRM Act identifies a list of 30 critical raw materials<\/strong>, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, rare earths, and magnesium.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives of the Act:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Increase and diversify the EU\u2019s CRMs supply<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen circularity, including recycling;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Support research and innovation on resource efficiency<\/strong> and the <strong>development of substitutes;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Setting benchmarks by 2030 for domestic capacities<\/strong>: The Act sets these benchmarks <strong>along the strategic raw materials value chain<\/strong> and for the diversification of EU supplies<\/li>\n<li>at least <strong>10% of the EU\u2019s annual consumption for extraction<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>at least <strong>40% of the EU\u2019s annual consumption for processing<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>at least <strong>15% of the EU\u2019s annual consumption for recycling<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>no more than 65% of the EU\u2019s annual consumption from a single third country<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>The Act will <strong>reduce the administrative burden<\/strong>, streamlining permitting procedures <strong>for critical raw materials projects in the EU.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To ensure supply chain resilience, the Act <strong>creates CRMs supply chain monitoring and stress-testing<\/strong>, coordinates strategic stocks and <strong>sets risk preparedness obligations on large companies producing strategic technologies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In addition to a list of CRMs for the whole EU economy, <strong>it lists strategic raw materials, which are those most crucial for strategic technologies<\/strong> used for green, digital, defence and space applications. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the European Union (EU)?<\/h3>\n<p>European Union (EU), international organization comprising 27 European countries and governing common economic, social, and security policies.The EU was created by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993.
