{"id":14888,"date":"2025-11-23T13:23:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T07:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=14888"},"modified":"2025-11-24T16:09:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T10:39:29","slug":"leptospirosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/leptospirosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Leptospirosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Leptospirosis Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Jamaica has declared an outbreak of leptospirosis following the devastation from Hurricane Melissa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Leptospirosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a fatal <\/span><b>bacterial disease.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Cause:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disease is caused by a <\/span><b>bacterium called Leptospira interrogans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Leptospira.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bacteria can infect humans by entering the <\/span><b>body through tiny cracks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wounds in the soles of the feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Prevalence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is more <\/span><b>prevalent in warm, humid countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and both urban and rural areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Leptospirosis may occur in two phases<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first phase (symptoms: fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, or diarrhoea) the patient may recover for a time but become ill again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a second phase occurs, it is more severe; the person may have kidney or liver failure or meningitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can be treated with antibiotics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Transmission of Leptospirosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>contagious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in animals but is occasionally transmitted to humans in certain environmental conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The carriers of the disease can be either <\/span><b>wild or domestic animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including rodents, cattle, pigs, and dogs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cycle of disease transmission begins <\/span><b>with the shedding of leptospira, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually in the urine of infected animals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infected animals can continue to excrete the bacteria into their surroundings for a few months, but sometimes <\/span><b>up to several years.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/jamaica-reports-deadly-leptospirosis-outbreak-after-hurricane-melissa\/article70310243.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by Leptospira, spreading through skin cuts.
