It is the <strong>biggest artificial lake in Asia,<\/strong> with an area of 746 sq.km.<\/li>\n<li>This is one of the oldest hydel projects of India, being the f<strong>irst post-independence major multipurpose river valley project <\/strong>in the country. It was inaugurated in the year <strong>1957<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The project provides 1,55,635 hectares of Kharif and 1,08,385 ha of Rabi <strong>irrigation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The installed capacity for <strong>power generation<\/strong> is 359.8 MW.<\/li>\n<li>More than 436,000 hectares of land in the <strong>Mahanadi delta also get irrigated<\/strong> by the water which is released from the powerhouse.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Besides, the project provides <strong>flood protection<\/strong> to 9500 sq. km of delta area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cattle Island:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a small island in the <strong>Hirakud reservoir<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is inhabited by a <strong>large herd of wild cattle, <\/strong>which are believed to be the <strong>descendants of cattle<\/strong> that were <strong>left behind by villagers when the dam was constructed<\/strong> in the 1950s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Which are the main tributaries of the Mahanadi River?<\/h3>\n<p>Mahanadi rises from Raipur district of Chhattisgarh and flows for about 851 km before its outfall into the Bay of Bengal.
