{"id":15103,"date":"2026-03-17T11:24:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T05:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15103"},"modified":"2026-03-20T17:28:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:58:48","slug":"foot-and-mouth-disease-fmd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/foot-and-mouth-disease-fmd\/","title":{"rendered":"Foot and Mouth Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Foot and Mouth Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Government of Gujarat has launched an intensive statewide vaccination campaign to control the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Foot and Mouth Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a highly <\/span><b>contagious viral infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Cause:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is caused by an <\/span><b>Aphthovirus of the family Picornaviridae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FMD is characterised by <\/span><b>fever and blister-like sores on the tongue and lips,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the mouth, on the teats and between the hooves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease causes <\/span><b>severe production losses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, while the majority of affected animals recover, the disease often leaves them weakened and debilitated.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>disease is rarely fatal in adult animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there is often high mortality in young animals due to myocarditis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a transboundary animal disease (TAD) that deeply <\/span><b>affects the production of livestock and disrupts regional <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and international trade in animals and animal products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intensively reared animals are more susceptible to the disease than traditional breeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is transmitted through<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Infected animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newly introduced into a herd (carrying virus in their saliva, milk, semen, etc.);\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contaminated pens\/buildings or contaminated animal transport vehicles;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Contaminated materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as hay, feed, water, milk or biologics;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contaminated clothing, footwear, or equipment;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Virus-infected meat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other contaminated animal products (if fed to animals when raw or improperly cooked);\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vaccination is the only effective preventive measure against FMD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ddnews.gov.in\/en\/gujarat-leads-foot-and-mouth-disease-vaccination-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DD News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly contagious viral infection that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats.
