


{"id":15181,"date":"2023-09-26T09:32:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T04:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15181"},"modified":"2025-04-03T09:04:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T03:34:14","slug":"ippb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ippb\/","title":{"rendered":"India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About India Post Payments Bank (IPPB):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>IPPB has been\u00a0<strong>established under the Department of Posts<\/strong>, Ministry of Communication, with\u00a0<strong>100% equity owned by the Government of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>IPPB was\u00a0<strong>launched on September 1, 2018,<\/strong> aimed at\u00a0<strong>making banking services available at people\u2019s doorstep.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate<\/strong>: To remove barriers for the unbanked and under-banked and\u00a0<strong>reach the last mile, leveraging a network comprising 160,000 post offices\u00a0<\/strong>(145,000 in rural areas) and 400,000 postal employees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters: New Delhi<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Functions<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The operations of IPPB will be\u00a0<strong>on a smaller scale as compared to other banks<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>will not advance loans or issue credit cards to avoid risk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0<strong>accept deposits, offer remittance services<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>mobile payments\/transfers\/purchases<\/strong> and other banking services like\u00a0<strong>ATM\/debit cards, net banking and third-party fund transfers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0<strong>accept deposits upto Rs 2 lakh<\/strong>, beyond which the account will be automatically converted into a post office savings account.<\/li>\n<li>The products and services of the bank will be made available through various mediums such as\u00a0<strong>counter services, micro ATMs, mobile banking apps, messages, and interactive voice responses.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The IPPB will\u00a0<strong>use Aadhaar to open accounts,<\/strong> and a\u00a0<strong>QR card and biometrics will be used for authentication,<\/strong> transactions, and payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What are Payments Banks?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A payments bank is like any other bank but\u00a0<strong>operates on a smaller scale without involving any credit risk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was set up on the\u00a0<strong>recommendations of the Nachiket Mor Committee.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>: Widen the spread of payment and\u00a0<strong>financial services to small businesses, low-income households,<\/strong> and migrant labor workforce in a secured technology-driven environment.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0<strong>registered under the Companies Act 2013<\/strong> but are\u00a0<strong>governed by a host of legislations such as the Banking Regulation Act, 1949; RBI Act<\/strong>, 1934; Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, etc.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>needs to have a minimum paid-up capital of Rs. 100,00,00,000.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Activities that can be performed:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>can take deposits up to Rs. 2,00,000<\/strong>. It\u00a0<strong>can accept demand deposits<\/strong> in the form of savings and current accounts.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>money received as deposits can be invested in secure government securities only<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in the form of Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR).<\/strong> This\u00a0<strong>must amount to 75% of the demand deposit balance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>remaining 25% is to be placed as time deposits<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>with other scheduled commercial banks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>t\u00a0<strong>can offer remittance services, mobile ayments\/transfers\/purchases<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>other banking services<\/strong> like ATM\/debit cards, net banking, and third-party fund transfers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activities that can be performed:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>cannot issue loans and credit cards.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It<strong> cannot accept time deposits or NRI deposits<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>cannot set up subsidiaries\u00a0<\/strong>to undertake non-banking financial activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Press Information Bureau (PIB)?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Press Information Bureau (PIB) is the nodal agency of the Government of India to disseminate information to the print and electronic media on government policies, programmes, initiatives and achievements.
