{"id":15249,"date":"2023-09-27T11:54:22","date_gmt":"2023-09-27T06:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15249"},"modified":"2025-04-03T09:33:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T04:03:39","slug":"tess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tess\/","title":{"rendered":"Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>NASA mission to discover exoplanets around nearby bright stars.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Launch<\/strong>: It was launched on\u00a0<strong>April 18, 2018,<\/strong> aboard a\u00a0<strong>SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket out of Cape Canaveral.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Orbit<\/strong>: TESS circles Earth in a\u00a0<strong>unique high Earth orbit of 12 to 15 days<\/strong>, which is\u00a0<strong>inclined in a way that the telescope\u2019s sky view is largely free from obstructions<\/strong> by our bright planet and the Moon.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>prime mission ended on July 4, 2020,<\/strong> and TESS is\u00a0<strong>now on an extended mission<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>TESS is\u00a0<strong>finding planets ranging from small, rocky worlds to giant planets<\/strong>, showcasing the diversity of planets in the galaxy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How does TESS find exoplanets?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>uses the transit method to detect planets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>looks for periodic dips in stars&#8217; brightness<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>as planets cross in front of them along our sightline.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>larger the planet, the further the drop in brightness<\/strong> during the transit.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>How long it takes a planet to pass in front of the star and come back tells us the shape of its orbit.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This method\u00a0<strong>reveals the diameter of the planet and the size of its orbit<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Orbits within a certain range lie in the \u201chabitable zone\u201d,<\/strong> where liquid water can exist on the surface of an Earth-like world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an Exoplanet?<\/h3>\n<p>All of the planets in our solar system orbit around the Sun.
