


{"id":15321,"date":"2023-09-29T06:44:34","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T01:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15321"},"modified":"2025-04-03T10:01:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T04:31:56","slug":"calipso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/calipso\/","title":{"rendered":"What is CALIPSO Mission?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About CALIPSO Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>CALIPSO (<strong>Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations<\/strong>) is a mission\u00a0<strong>dedicated to studying how clouds and aerosols impact the Earth\u2019s climate<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>joint project between NASA<\/strong> (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)\u00a0<strong>and CNES (Centre National d&#8217;\u00c9tudes Spatiales), the French space agency.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched in 2006<\/strong>, CALIPSO is a\u00a0<strong>satellite-based observatory<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Scientists are using data from CALIPSO to\u00a0<strong>construct 3D models of the atmosphere<\/strong> that improve our ability\u00a0<strong>to predict future climate change.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>CALIPSO\u00a0<strong>has been part of a constellation of spacecraft called the &#8220;A-Train,&#8221;<\/strong> including Aqua, Aura, and PARASOL spacecraft,\u00a0<strong>dedicated to studying the Earth\u2019s weather<\/strong> and environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Instrumentation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It carries\u00a0<strong>CALIOP, a two-wavelength, polarization-sensitive lidar<\/strong>, along with\u00a0<strong>two passive sensors\u00a0<\/strong>operating in the visible and thermal infrared spectral regions.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>lidar emitted pulses of laser light and measured the amount of light that was scattered back by clouds and aerosols<\/strong>. This information was used\u00a0<strong>to create vertical profiles of cloud and aerosol properties<\/strong>, such as their height, thickness, and optical depth.<\/li>\n<li>CALIOP is the\u00a0<strong>first lidar to provide long-term atmospheric measurements\u00a0<\/strong>from Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/li>\n<li>This information helps scientists\u00a0<strong>create three-dimensional profiles\u00a0<\/strong>of cloud and aerosol distributions.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>mission recorded more than 10 billion LIDAR measurements<\/strong> and helped create\u00a0<strong>thousands of scientific reports<\/strong> over its 17 years of operation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are aerosols?<\/h3>\n<p>Aerosols are tiny particles or droplets suspended in the air or another gas.
