{"id":15381,"date":"2023-09-30T04:40:11","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T23:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15381"},"modified":"2025-04-03T10:25:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T04:55:37","slug":"dachigam-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/dachigam-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Dachigam National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Dachigam National Park:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located 22 km (kilometers) from\u00a0<strong>Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It covers an area of\u00a0<strong>141 sq km (square kilometers<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>name literally stands for \u2018ten villages\u2019<\/strong>, which could be in\u00a0<strong>memory of the ten villages that were relocated\u00a0<\/strong>in order to create the park.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>initially established to ensure the supply of clean drinking water to Srinagar city<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A protected area since 1910, it was\u00a0<strong>declared a national park in 1981.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The park is situated at\u00a0<strong>altitudes ranging from 5500 ft to 14,000 ft.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The park is best\u00a0<strong>known as the home of the Hangul, or Kashmir stag.<\/strong> It holds the\u00a0<strong>last viable population of the vulnerable hangul<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terrain<\/strong>: Ranges from\u00a0<strong>gently sloping grasslands to cliffs and sharp rocky outcrops.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>: Includes wild\u00a0<strong>cherry, apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, chestnut, willow, walnut<\/strong>, oak, pine, birch, poplar, chinar, and elm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Besides Hangul, Dachigam is also famous for its populations of\u00a0<strong>musk deer, leopard, Himalayan Grey Langur, leopard cat,<\/strong> Himalayan Black Bear, yellow-throated marten, among others.<\/li>\n<li>It is the residence of raptors such as the\u00a0<strong>Eurasian eagle owl, Lammergeier, Eurasian griffon\u00a0<\/strong>and white-rumped vulture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Key Facts about Kashmir Stag:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also called Hangul, which is a\u00a0<strong>subspecies of Central Asian red deer endemic to Kashmir and surrounding areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>found in dense riverine forests in the high valleys and mountains of Jammu and Kashmir and northern Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In Kashmir, it is found primarily in the\u00a0<strong>Dachigam National Park<\/strong> where it receives protection.<\/li>\n<li>A small population has also been\u00a0<strong>witnessed in Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong> in south Kashmir.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN: Critically Endangered<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES : Appendix I<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an Eco-sensitive zone?<\/h3>\n<p>They are created as \u201cshock absorbers\u201d for the protected areas, to minimize the negative impact on the \u201cfragile ecosystems\u201d by certain human activities taking place nearby.
