{"id":15397,"date":"2023-10-01T08:32:16","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T03:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15397"},"modified":"2025-04-03T10:31:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T05:01:52","slug":"kalakkad-mundanthurai-tiger-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kalakkad-mundanthurai-tiger-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located in the\u00a0<strong>Southern Western Ghats in<\/strong> the Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of\u00a0<strong>Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was established as a\u00a0<strong>Tiger Reseve in 1988.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This reserve is a\u00a0<strong>mixture of three main sanctuaries<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Kalakad Sanctuary,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Mundanthurai Sanctuary,<\/strong> and a part of\u00a0<strong>Kanyakumari Sanctuary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nestled between Kerala and Tamil Nadu,<\/strong> the A<strong>gastya Malai Hill Range forms the core area\u00a0<\/strong>of the sanctuary and is\u00a0<strong>part of one of the world&#8217;s 18 biodiversity hotspots<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The reserve is\u00a0<strong>also known as the \u201cRiver Sanctuary<\/strong>\u201d, with as many as\u00a0<strong>14 rivers originating from this Tiger Reserve.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Terrain: Undulating with several valleys and porous rocks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It varies from\u00a0<strong>thorny shrub jungles to lush evergreen forests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In addition to\u00a0<strong>forests, savannah woodlands, and grasslands<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>there are tea and coffee plantations within the reserve.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>: Important species include\u00a0<strong>Sarcandra, Paphiopedulum, druryi, Hopea parviflora,<\/strong> Hopea utilis, Calophylum elatum, Cullenia exarillata, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Tiger, leopard, rusty spotted cat, wild dog, sloth bear,<\/strong> elephant, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, mouse deer, nilgiri langur, slender loris, bonnet macaque, lion tailed macaque, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Public Interest Litigation (PIL)?<\/h3>\n<p>According to the Supreme Court (in Janata Dal v.
