


{"id":15425,"date":"2023-10-01T11:43:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T06:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15425"},"modified":"2025-04-03T10:42:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T05:12:53","slug":"staghorn-coral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/staghorn-coral\/","title":{"rendered":"Staghorn coral"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Staghorn coral:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the most important\u00a0<strong>corals in the Caribbean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It, along with elkhorn coral and star corals built Caribbean coral reefs over the last 5,000 years.<\/li>\n<li>Staghorn coral can form dense groups\u00a0<strong>called \u201cthickets\u201d in very shallow water.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These provide important habitat for other reef animals, especially fish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appearance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Staghorn coral colonies are golden\u00a0<strong>tan or pale brown with white tip<\/strong>s and they get their color from the algae that live within their tissue.<\/li>\n<li>These corals have antler-like branches and typically stem out from a central trunk and angle upward.<\/li>\n<li>Each staghorn coral colony is made up\u00a0<strong>of many individual polyps<\/strong> that grow together.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>These coral get food\u00a0<strong>from photosynthetic algae that live inside the coral&#8217;s cells<\/strong>. They also feed by capturing plankton with their polyps\u2019 tentacles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is found typically in clear, shallow water (15\u201360 feet) on coral reefs throughout\u00a0<strong>the Bahamas, Florida, and the Caribbean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The northern extent of\u00a0<strong>the range in the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong> is Palm Beach County, Florida, where it is relatively rare.<\/li>\n<li>They live in many coral reef habitats\u00a0<strong>including spur and groove, bank reef, patch reef, and transitional reef habitats,<\/strong> as well as on limestone ridges, terraces, and hard bottom habitats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lifespan &amp; Reproduction<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These coral reaches reproductive maturity at about 7 inches tall.<\/li>\n<li>Staghorn coral is a\u00a0<strong>simultaneous hermaphrodite<\/strong>, meaning each colony produces both eggs and sperm, but usually does not self-fertilize.<\/li>\n<li>This coral\u00a0<strong>sexually reproduces once per year<\/strong> after the full moon in late summer by \u201cbroadcast spawning\u201d eggs and sperm into the water column.<\/li>\n<li>Fertilized eggs develop into larvae that settle on hard surfaces and form new colonies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Climate change<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diseases:<\/strong> It is particularly susceptible to\u00a0<strong>white band and white plague<\/strong> diseases.<\/li>\n<li>Unsustainable Fishing Pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is White band disease?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a common\u00a0<strong>tissue loss disease.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Studies suggest that white band disease is caused by a communicable agent, however, a specific pathogen has not yet been definitively identified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Algae?<\/h3>\n<p>Algae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms that can be found in various aquatic and moist environments, including freshwater and marine ecosystems.
