{"id":15544,"date":"2023-10-05T01:06:30","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T19:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15544"},"modified":"2025-04-03T14:32:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T09:02:03","slug":"weaponised-boat-swarms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/weaponised-boat-swarms\/","title":{"rendered":"Autonomous Weaponised Boat Swarms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited has\u00a0<strong>emerged as the winner of the iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence)<\/strong> DISC-7 program, particularly\u00a0<strong>under the SPRINT framework.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The agreement between the Indian Navy and the organisation\u00a0<strong>marks the 50th contract awarded under the SPRINT program.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About Autonomous Weaponised Boat Swarms:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>These swarms are\u00a0<strong>strategically designed for naval tactics<\/strong>, employing a\u00a0<strong>coordinated deployment of numerous small unmanned boats<\/strong> to overwhelm an adversary\u2019s naval defenses.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0<strong>equipped with a variety of weapons and sensors<\/strong> that are capable of\u00a0<strong>remote or autonomous operation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are equipped with an i<strong>ntegrated system capable of executing a variety of naval and security missions<\/strong>, such as\u00a0<strong>littoral\/ODA Patrol, High-Speed Interdiction<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Coastal Surveillance, Local Naval Defence,\u00a0<\/strong>Constabulary Operations, C4ISR, Medium-Sized Unmanned Surface Vessel, and\u00a0<strong>Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is the SPRINT Initiative?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an initiative to promote the\u00a0<strong>development of niche defence technologies by domestic companies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO),<\/strong> in conjunction\u00a0<strong>with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO)<\/strong>, aims to\u00a0<strong>induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies\/products into the Indian Navy\u00a0<\/strong>as a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.<\/li>\n<li>This collaborative\u00a0<strong>project is named SPRINT &#8211; Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&amp;D through iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), NIIO and TDAC (Technology Development Acceleration Cell).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>launched by the Prime Minister in July, 2022<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Key Facts about iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>flagship initiative of the Ministry of Defence (MoD<\/strong>), launched in\u00a0<strong>April 2018.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim<\/strong>: To achieve\u00a0<strong>self-reliance and foster innovation and technology development\u00a0<\/strong>in Defence and Aerospace\u00a0<strong>by engaging Industries including MSMEs, start-ups<\/strong>, individual innovators, R&amp;D institutes, and academia.<\/li>\n<li>iDEX has\u00a0<strong>partnered with leading incubators in the country<\/strong> to\u00a0<strong>provide handholding, technical support, and guidance to the winners of iDEX challenges<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>iDEX will\u00a0<strong>be funded and managed by a \u2018Defence Innovation Organization (DIO)\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>which has been\u00a0<strong>formed as a \u2018not for profit company<\/strong> as per Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013\u00a0<strong>by the two founder members, i<\/strong>.e. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) &#8211; HAL &amp; BEL.<\/li>\n<li>iDEX will\u00a0<strong>function as the executive arm of DIO<\/strong>, carrying out all the required activities, while DIO will provide high-level policy guidance to iDEX.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Under iDEX, financial support is provided to Start-ups\/MSMEs\/individual innovators<\/strong> and Partner Incubators through DIO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO)?<\/h3>\n<p>The Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) was launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in August 2020.
