{"id":15556,"date":"2026-07-20T11:50:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T06:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15556"},"modified":"2026-07-20T12:53:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:23:22","slug":"kolleru-wildlife-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kolleru-wildlife-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) is learnt to have issued directions to the Andhra Pradesh government over illegal fish ponds and environmental degradation in the Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located in the West Godavari and Krishna districts of <\/span><b>Andhra Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established in November 1999, under the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife Protection Act of 1972<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary covers <\/span><b>wetlands and marshes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that provide a vital habitat for diverse flora and fauna.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary protects part of the Kolleru Lake wetland, which gained Ramsar Convention for International importance in 2002.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lake is fed directly by the seasonal <\/span><b>Budameru and Tammileru rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is connected to the Krishna and Godavari systems by 67 inflowing drains and channels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a crucial wetland ecosystem and serves as a stopover point for migratory birds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Flora:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sanctuary\u2019s flora includes various aquatic plants, <\/span><b>submerged macrophytes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and wetland vegetation that provide essential food and shelter for the diverse bird species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is home to more than 150 species of resident and migratory birds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonly found birds in the sanctuary are: little egret, cattle egret, pied kingfisher, small blue kingfisher, blackcapped kingfisher, pond heron, reef heron, grey heron, night heron, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/andhra-pradesh\/action-against-illegal-fish-ponds-in-kolleru-wildlife-sanctuary-brooks-no-delay-supreme-court-panel-tells-ap-government\/article71234444.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the West Godavari and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh.
