{"id":15564,"date":"2026-02-05T11:32:51","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T06:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15564"},"modified":"2026-02-05T16:06:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:36:39","slug":"hakki-pikki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hakki-pikki\/","title":{"rendered":"Hakki Pikki Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Hakki Pikki Tribe Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight members of Karnataka\u2019s Hakki Pikki tribal community, who had travelled to Central Africa for the sale of herbal products, are now facing a serious crisis after their visas expired.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Hakki Pikki Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Hakki-Pikki\u2019 is one of the major tribal communities in <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2011 census, the Hakki Pikki population in Karnataka is 11,892.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kannada, the word \u2018<\/span><b>Hakki\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stands for \u2018<\/span><b>bird<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; and \u2018<\/span><b>Pikki\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stands for the verb \u2018<\/span><b>to catch\u2019.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the community is <\/span><b>known as the \u2018bird catcher,\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is their <\/span><b>traditional occupation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u00a0 <\/span><b>believe their original ancestor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the <\/span><b>legendary Ranapratap Singh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that they are <\/span><b>from a Kshatriya or warrior background.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They believe their <\/span><b>ancestors migrated to southern India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after being <\/span><b>defeated by the Moghuls.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are recognized as a <\/span><b>Scheduled Tribe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Language:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being surrounded by Dravidian languages and living in southern India, the community speaks an <\/span><b>Indo-Aryan language.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their <\/span><b>mother tongue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was designated &#8216;<\/span><b>Vaagri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; by scholars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They communicate in &#8216;Vaagri&#8217; at home but <\/span><b>speak in Kannada<\/b> <b>when conducting daily business.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>UNESCO has listed \u2018Vaagri\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as one of the <\/span><b>endangered languages.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Occupation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>After <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the implementation of <\/span><b>stricter wildlife laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tribe <\/span><b>changed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its <\/span><b>occupation from hunting to selling spices, flowers, Ayurveda formulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>herbal oils.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They began doing odd jobs like working in fields and sharpening knives and sickles by riding around towns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are renowned for their <\/span><b>indigenous medicines.
