{"id":15748,"date":"2023-10-11T03:11:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T21:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15748"},"modified":"2025-04-03T19:33:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T14:03:49","slug":"indian-ocean-rim-association-iora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-ocean-rim-association-iora\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Indian Ocean Rim Association:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>established in 1997<\/strong> as an <strong>intergovernmental organisation<\/strong> of States on the rim of the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member countries:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has members from <strong>Africa, West Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia<\/strong> ,Europe and Oceania.<\/li>\n<li>The Association\u2019s membership has expanded to <strong>23 member states<\/strong> and 11 dialogue partners.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asia:<\/strong> India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Africa:<\/strong> Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Somalia , South Africa, Tanzania, Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oceania:<\/strong> Australia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Europe:<\/strong> France<\/li>\n<li>Its apex body is the <strong>Council of Foreign Ministers<\/strong> (COM) which <strong>meets annually.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>IORA has identified <strong>six priority areas<\/strong> namely: Trade and Investment, Maritime Safety and Security, Fisheries Management, Disaster Risk Management and Blue Economy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>secretariat is based in Eb\u00e8ne Mauritius<\/strong> and is overseen by a <strong>secretary-general<\/strong> who is appointed for a <strong>three-year period.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the SAGAR initiative?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an important policy framework launched by the Indian government to address various aspects related to the Indian Ocean.
