the protection of Chilika Lake\u2019s biodiversity and the development of its surrounding areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Chilika Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>brackish water lake and a shallow lagoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with estuarine character spread across the districts of Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam in the state of <\/span><b>Odisha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>Asia\u2019s largest brackish water lake.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located at the <\/span><b>mouth of the Daya River, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chilika Lake is the <\/span><b>second-largest brackish water lagoon in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after the New Caledonian barrier reef in New Caledonia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waterspread area of Chilika varies between 900 to 1165 sq. km. during summers and monsoons, respectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bay-of-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bay of Bengal<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a 32 km long and 1.5 km wide channel that mostly runs parallel to the Bay, separated by a narrow spit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chilika Lake has <\/span><b>several islands,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Nalabana Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><b>Declared a Bird Sanctuary (1987)<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kalijai Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Known for the <\/span><b>Kalijai Temple<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other islands include <\/span><b>Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, Beacon Island, Satpada Island,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1981<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chilika Lake was designated the <\/span><b>first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Biodiversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>largest wintering ground for migratory birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the I<\/span><b>ndian subcontinent.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Birds from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other remote parts of <\/span><b>Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Central and Southeast Asia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ladakh and Himalayas come here.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>White-bellied sea eagles, Graylag Geese, Purple Moorhen, Jacana, Herons, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Flamingos <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are among the many species which make the lake a bird watcher&#8217;s delight.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also home to one of the<\/span><b> world&#8217;s largest breeding colonies of Flamingos.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from the avifaunal species, the region also highlights varied wild animals such as <\/span><b>Blackbuck, Golden Jackals, Spotted Deer, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Hyenas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also
