{"id":15871,"date":"2024-10-15T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T06:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15871"},"modified":"2025-04-03T20:25:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T14:55:04","slug":"ipu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ipu\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Inter-Parliamentary Union:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the international\u00a0<strong>organization<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>Parliaments which\u00a0<\/strong>was\u00a0<strong>established in 1889<\/strong>\u00a0in Paris to promote representative democracy and world peace.<\/li>\n<li>It facilitates\u00a0<strong>parliamentary diplomacy<\/strong>\u00a0and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development around the world.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was the first multilateral political organization in the world,\u00a0<strong>encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Members:<\/strong>\u00a0It comprises\u00a0<strong>180 member<\/strong>\u00a0parliaments and 15 associate members.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, gender-balanced, and more diverse.<\/li>\n<li>It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world.<\/li>\n<li>The IPU moved its headquarters to Geneva in 1921.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong>\u00a0It is financed primarily by its members out of public funds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Structure<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IPU Assembly:\u00a0<\/strong>It is the principal statutory body that expresses the views of the IPU on political issues. It brings together parliamentarians to study international problems and make recommendations for action.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Governing Council:\u00a0<\/strong>It is the plenary policymaking body of the IPU. It is\u00a0<strong>composed of three representatives<\/strong>\u00a0from each member parliament. The President of the IPU is ex-officio President of the Governing Council.<\/li>\n<li>The Council establishes the annual programme and budget of the IPU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Executive Committees:\u00a0<\/strong>In accordance with the IPU statutes, this\u00a0<strong>17-member body oversees the administration<\/strong>\u00a0of the IPU and provides advice to the Governing Council.
