{"id":15871,"date":"2026-10-04T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T06:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15871"},"modified":"2026-10-04T13:07:51","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T07:37:51","slug":"ipu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ipu\/","title":{"rendered":"Inter-Parliamentary Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Inter-Parliamentary Union Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by the Hon\u2019ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha has departed for Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, to participate in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Inter-Parliamentary Union<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>international organization of Parliaments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was established in 1889 in Paris to promote representative democracy and world peace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IPU <\/span><b>promotes democratic governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, institutions and values, working with parliaments and parliamentarians to articulate and respond to the needs and aspirations of the people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works for peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, <\/span><b>climate action and sustainable development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through political dialogue, cooperation and parliamentary action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Members:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It comprises <\/span><b>183 member<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parliaments and 15 associate members.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IPU moved its headquarters to <\/span><b>Geneva in 1921.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is financed <\/span><b>primarily by its members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of public funds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Governance Structure of Inter-Parliamentary Union<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>IPU Assembly:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the <\/span><b>principal statutory body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that expresses the views of the IPU on political issues. It brings together parliamentarians to study international problems and make recommendations for action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Governing Council:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the <\/span><b>plenary policymaking body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the IPU. It is <\/span><b>composed of three representatives from each member parliament<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The President of the IPU is ex-officio President of the Governing Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Council establishes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>annual programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and budget of the IPU.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Executive Committees<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is made <\/span><b>up of the President<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>15 elected members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from different geopolitical groups, the <\/span><b>President of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>President of the Board of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 15 members of the Executive Committee are elected by the Council for a four-year term.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>President of the IPU<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an ex officio member and President of the Committee.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Standing Committees:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are <\/span><b>three Standing Committees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set up by the IPU Governing Council to assist the Assembly in its work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2318590&amp;reg=48&amp;lang=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Inter-Parliamentary Union, founded in Paris in 1889, is the global organization of parliaments promoting democracy and world peace.
