It can be life-threatening.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is spread through\u00a0<strong>contact with infected blood.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This can happen through sharing needles or syringes, or from unsafe medical procedures such as blood transfusions with unscreened blood products.<\/li>\n<li>It can be passed\u00a0<strong>from an infected mother to her baby<\/strong> and via sexual practices that lead to exposure to blood.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis C is\u00a0<strong>not spread through breast milk<\/strong>, food, water or casual contact such as hugging, kissing and sharing food or drinks with an infected person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>: It can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine and yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geographical distribution<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This virus infection\u00a0<strong>occurs in all WHO regions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The highest burden of disease is in\u00a0<strong>the Eastern Mediterranean Region<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>European Region.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>New HCV infections are usually asymptomatic, few people are diagnosed when the infection is recent.<\/li>\n<li>In those people who develop chronic HCV infection,\u00a0<strong>the infection is often undiagnosed<\/strong> because\u00a0<strong>it remains asymptomatic until decades<\/strong> after infection when symptoms develop secondary to serious liver damage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is no vaccine for hepatitis C<\/strong>, but it can be\u00a0<strong>treated with antiviral medications<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is Gold tier status?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It includes meeting\u00a0<strong>specific criteria<\/strong> such as\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring\u00a0<strong>100% blood and injection safety<\/strong>, maintaining a minimum of 150 needles\/syringes per year for people who inject drugs (PWID)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong> of over\u00a0<strong>80% of people living with chronic hepatitis C virus<\/strong> (HCV),<\/li>\n<li>Treating of over 70% of individuals diagnosed with HCV.<\/li>\n<li>The establishing of a\u00a0<strong>sentinel surveillance programme<\/strong> for hepatitis sequelae.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a virus?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a small infectious agent that requires a host cell to replicate and reproduce.
