{"id":15895,"date":"2023-10-15T12:46:41","date_gmt":"2023-10-15T07:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15895"},"modified":"2025-04-03T20:57:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T15:27:27","slug":"grey-whales-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/grey-whales-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Grey whales"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Grey whales:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Gray whales have a\u00a0<strong>hump and a ridge of sharp bumps along their backs<\/strong>, instead of a dorsal fin.<\/li>\n<li>They are a\u00a0<strong>type of baleen whale<\/strong>, which means they\u00a0<strong>filter food from the water<\/strong> through special bristly structures in their mouths<\/li>\n<li>They stay close to\u00a0<strong>shore and feed in shallow water.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are found mainly in\u00a0<strong>shallow coastal waters in the North Pacific Ocean<\/strong>, although during migration, they do sometimes cross deep waters far from shore.<\/li>\n<li>There\u00a0<strong>are two geographic distributions of gray whales<\/strong> in the North Pacific:\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>eastern North Pacific stock<\/strong> or DPS, found along the west coast of North America.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>western North Pacific stock<\/strong> or DPS, primarily found along the coast of eastern Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Migration journey<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are well-known for migrations that take them between feeding and breeding areas, swimming as much as 12,000 miles round trip.<\/li>\n<li>Western gray whales migrate into their summer feeding grounds near\u00a0<strong>Sahkalin Island, Russia<\/strong> in late May or early June and return to their winter feeding grounds in the South China Sea in late autumn.<\/li>\n<li>Summer feeding grounds for the eastern population lie in the\u00a0<strong>Bering and Chukchi Seas between Alaska and Russia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the winter, these eastern gray whales migrate south along the west coast of the US to Mexico to breed and have their calves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN:<\/strong> Western Grey whale (<strong>Critically endangered)<\/strong> and Eastern Grey whale\u00a0<strong>(Least concern)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) Where is Sakhalin Island?<\/h3>\n<p>Sakhalin Island, also known as Sakhalin, is a large island located in the North Pacific Ocean, just off the eastern coast of Russia.
