{"id":15899,"date":"2023-10-15T06:39:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-15T01:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15899"},"modified":"2025-04-03T20:59:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T15:29:13","slug":"ins-sagardhwani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ins-sagardhwani\/","title":{"rendered":"INS Sagardhwani"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About INS Sagardhwani:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>marine acoustic research ship<\/strong> designed and developed by Naval Physical &amp; Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) of DRDO, Kochi and constructed indigenously by GRSE Ltd.<\/li>\n<li>It was launched in July 1994.<\/li>\n<li>The NPOL is involved in studying the ocean environment and other related fields.<\/li>\n<li>The vessel has been engaging in extensive oceanic\u00a0<strong>observing missions and research for the last 25 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is Sagar Maitri?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a novel\u00a0<strong>initiative of the Defence Research and Development Organisation<\/strong>\u00a0(DRDO).<\/li>\n<li>It supports the broad objective of India\u2019s policy declaration \u2018Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)\u2019 to promote\u00a0<strong>closer cooperation in socio-economic aspects<\/strong> as well as more significant\u00a0<strong>scientific interaction<\/strong>, especially in ocean research among\u00a0<strong>Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under the aegis of this policy, DRDO initiated a\u00a0<strong>scientific component named \u2018MAITRI<\/strong> (Marine and Allied Interdisciplinary Training and Research Initiative)\u2019, which focuses on establishing long-term collaboration with IOR\u00a0<strong>countries in the field of \u2018Ocean Research and Development\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The missions aim to\u00a0<strong>establish long-term scientific partnerships<\/strong> and collaborations with Oman, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Myanmar \u2014 the eight IOR countries.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>current mission (SM-4)<\/strong> plan includes scientific deployments onboard INS Sagardhwani in the\u00a0<strong>Northern Arabian Sea<\/strong> and initiating collaborative research programmes with the Department of Marine Sciences &amp; Fisheries at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman.<\/li>\n<li>These missions give the scientists an opportunity to cooperate and build strong working relationships with their IOR counterparts studying the oceans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the SAGAR Initiative?<\/h3>\n<p>The Sagar Initiative is a maritime and ocean policy launched by the Indian government to enhance cooperation and engagement with maritime neighboring countries and strengthen India&#8217;s presence and influence in the Indian Ocean region.
