


{"id":15915,"date":"2023-10-16T06:01:11","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T00:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15915"},"modified":"2025-04-03T21:06:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T15:36:42","slug":"hailstorm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hailstorm\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Hailstorm?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Hailstorm:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hail<\/strong> is a type of\u00a0<strong>solid rain made up of balls<\/strong> or lumps\u00a0<strong>of ice.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Storms<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>that produce hail<\/strong> that\u00a0<strong>reaches the ground\u00a0<\/strong>are<strong> known as hailstorms.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They typically\u00a0<strong>last for no more than 15 minutes<\/strong> but can cause\u00a0<strong>injuries to people and damage<\/strong> buildings, vehicles, and\u00a0<strong>crops.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are most<strong> common in the midlatitudes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hailstorms can sometimes be<strong> accompanied by<\/strong> other\u00a0<strong>severe weather events<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>such as cyclones<\/strong> and tornadoes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size<\/strong>: The size of hailstones can\u00a0<strong>vary widely<\/strong>, from\u00a0<strong>small pellets<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>less than 1\/4 inch<\/strong> in diameter\u00a0<strong>to larger stones<\/strong> measuring\u00a0<strong>several inches in size<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conditions for Hailstorms to occur:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Highly developed Cumulonimbus clouds<\/strong> need to be present. These are the massive\u00a0<strong>anvil or mushroom-shaped clouds<\/strong> that are\u00a0<strong>seen during thunderstorms,<\/strong> which can\u00a0<strong>reach heights of up to 65,000 feet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There must be\u00a0<strong>strong currents of air ascending through these clouds<\/strong>. These currents are commonly<strong> known as updrafts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The clouds<\/strong> will\u00a0<strong>need to contain high concentrations of supercooled liquid water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How are Hails formed?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It begins as a\u00a0<strong>water droplet<\/strong> that is\u00a0<strong>swept up by an updraft inside of a thundercloud.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Other supercooled water droplets<\/strong> which are already\u00a0<strong>present inside the cloud<\/strong> will\u00a0<strong>adhere to the water droplet\u2019s surface<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>forming layers of ice\u00a0<\/strong>around it.<\/li>\n<li>As the\u00a0<strong>water droplet reaches higher elevations<\/strong> within the cloud, it\u00a0<strong>comes into contact with more<\/strong> and more\u00a0<strong>supercooled particles<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>hail embryo will grow larger<\/strong> and larger as it reaches higher altitudes in the updraft.<\/li>\n<li>Finally,\u00a0<strong>it will reach a size\u00a0<\/strong>and weight\u00a0<strong>where gravity will begin to act<\/strong> on it and\u00a0<strong>pull it down.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Large hailstones<\/strong> are often characterized by a<strong>lternating layers of clear and opaque ice<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>caused by irregular rates of freezing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Tropical cyclone?<\/h3>\n<p>A tropical cyclone is a rapid rotating storm originating over tropical oceans from where it draws the energy to develop. It has a low pressure centre and clouds spiraling towards the eyewall surrounding the &#8220;eye&#8221;, the central part of the system where the weather is normally calm and free of clouds. Its diameter is typically around 200 to 500 km, but can reach 1000 km.
