{"id":15939,"date":"2025-09-26T11:51:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T06:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15939"},"modified":"2025-09-26T13:10:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:40:21","slug":"pallikaranai-marshland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pallikaranai-marshland\/","title":{"rendered":"Pallikaranai Marshland"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Pallikaranai Marshland Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has ordered a halt on all construction activity within one kilometre of the Pallikaranai Marshland until a scientific study is conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pallikaranai Marshland<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>freshwater marsh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>partly saline wetland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situated about 20 kilometres south of the city of Chennai, <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It serves as an aquatic buffer of the flood-prone Chennai and Chengalpattu districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It encompasses <\/span><b>65 wetlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through two outlets, viz., <\/span><b>Okkiyam Madavu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Kovalam Creek,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and falls <\/span><b>into the Bay of Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its eastern periphery, the Marsh is flanked by the <\/span><b>Buckingham Canal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the <\/span><b>Ramsar sites in India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Fauna<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diverse ecosystem of the marshland supports some 115 bird species, ten mammals, 21 reptiles, ten amphibians, 46 fish, nine <\/span><b>molluscs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> five crustaceans, and seven butterfly species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include notable species such as <\/span><b>Russell\u2019s viper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Daboia siamensis) and birds such as the glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), <\/span><b>grey-headed lapwings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Vanellus cinereus), and Pheasant-tailed jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although tropical in bio-climate, the influence of the Bay of Bengal has been significant on the Marsh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Threats:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It continues to face significant <\/span><b>anthropogenic pressures,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including encroachments and sewage discharge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/chennai\/ngt-bars-construction-activity-around-pallikaranai-marshland-until-a-scientific-study-is-conducted\/article70092974.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pallikaranai Marshland is a freshwater marsh and partly saline wetland situated about 20 kilometres south of the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
