


{"id":15995,"date":"2023-10-18T04:17:42","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=15995"},"modified":"2025-04-03T21:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T16:09:11","slug":"saptakoshi-high-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/saptakoshi-high-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"Saptakoshi High Dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Saptakoshi High Dam<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0multipurpose project proposed to be constructed\u00a0on the Saptakoshi River of Nepal (known as Koshi River in India).<\/li>\n<li>The project is primarily aimed\u00a0at controlling floods in southeast Nepal\u00a0and northern Bihar\u00a0and generating hydropower.<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0bilateral project of the Indian and Nepalese\u00a0governments under the Koshi agreement.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0proposed place\u00a0lies 1.6 km upstream from Barahakshetra temple in the\u00a0Sunsari\u00a0district of Nepal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about Koshi River:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Koshi River, also known as the &#8220;Saptakoshi&#8221; in Nepal, is a\u00a0trans-boundary river that flows through India and Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0largest river basin in Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>It is one of the biggest\u00a0tributaries of the Ganga.<\/li>\n<li>Course:\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0originates from the Tibetan Plateau,\u00a0crosses the Himalayas, and flows through the Mahabharat range and Siwalik hills,\u00a0reaching the plains of eastern Nepal and\u00a0finally meeting the Ganges\u00a0in India.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0overall length of the river is\u00a0729 km (453 miles).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Kosi river valley is\u00a0bounded by steep margins that\u00a0disconnect it from the Yarlung Zangbo River to the north, the\u00a0Mahananda River to the east, the\u00a0Gandaki to the west\u00a0and the Ganga to the south.<\/li>\n<li>Tributaries:\n<ul>\n<li>Indrawati, Sun Koshi, Tama Koshi, Likhu, Dudh Koshi, Arun, and Tamor are the major\u00a0seven tributaries of the Koshi river system.<\/li>\n<li>These seven tributaries\u00a0meet at Triveni, from where it is called Sapta-Koshi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Over the last 250 years, the Kosi River has\u00a0changed its course. It has an\u00a0unstable nature\u00a0due to heavy silt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Koshi River, often\u00a0dubbed the &#8216;Sorrow of Bihar,&#8217;\u00a0inflicts devastating floods and substantial damage each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Koshi agreement?<\/h3>\n<p>India and Nepal signed the Kosi agreement in 1954 to regulate the flow of the river and ensure flood management. A barrage straddling the India-Nepal border was to be constructed for this purpose, and embankments were to be raised on either side of the river.
