This sanctuary is a\u00a0part of the Western Ghats.<\/li>\n<li>Bhimashankar is the\u00a0source of the river Bhima.<\/li>\n<li>History:\n<ul>\n<li>It was\u00a0built around the 13th century. It is a testament to the\u00a0skills of the Vishwakarma sculptors.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Structures such as the\u00a0shikhara (spires) were\u00a0added by\u00a0Maratha empire statesman,\u00a0Nana Phadnavis, in the 18th century.<\/li>\n<li>The Maratha ruler,\u00a0Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is also believed to have\u00a0facilitated worship here through his endowments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Architecture:\n<ul>\n<li>It is a composite of old and new structures in the\u00a0Nagara style of architecture.<\/li>\n<li>The temple features\u00a0huge court spaces,\u00a0intricate carvings on walls, and\u00a0colossal pillars.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The sanctum of the temple, called\u00a0Garbhgriha, has been\u00a0constructed at a lower level inside which the sacred Jyotirlinga is present.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Swayambhoo\u00a0or self-emanated Shiv Linga\u00a0is precisely\u00a0in the center of the floor of the Sanctum\u00a0Sanctorum.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0massive pillars and\u00a0doorframes of the temple are\u00a0awash with exquisite mythological carvings of divine figures and holy symbols.<\/li>\n<li>The temple also\u00a0houses an ancient shrine of Lord Shani which is considered very auspicious by the devotees.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0statue of Nandi, the revered bull who\u2019s the vehicle of Shiva,\u00a0is present right at the entrance of the temple.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Jyotirlingas?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A Jyotirlinga is a shrine\u00a0where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam.<\/li>\n<li>There are currently 12 main Jyotirlingas in India.<\/li>\n<li>The 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India\u00a0take the name of the presiding deity.\u00a0Each\u00a0considered a different manifestation of Lord Shiva.<\/li>\n<li>12 Jyotirlingas in India are:\n<ul>\n<li>Somnath Jyotirlinga in Gir, Gujarat<\/li>\n<li>Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh<\/li>\n<li>Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain,\u00a0Madhya Pradesh<\/li>\n<li>Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Khandwa,\u00a0Madhya Pradesh<\/li>\n<li>Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar, Jharkhand<\/li>\n<li>Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra<\/li>\n<li>Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu<\/li>\n<li>Nageshwar Jyotirlinga in Dwarka, Gujarat<\/li>\n<li>Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga in Varanasi,\u00a0Uttar Pradesh<\/li>\n<li>Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga in Nasik, Maharashtra<\/li>\n<li>Kedarnath Jyotirlinga in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand<\/li>\n<li>Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga in Aurangabad, Maharashtra<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Nagara style of architecture?<\/h3>\n<p>Nagara is the style of temple architecture which became popular in Northern India. It is common here to build an entire temple on a stone platform with steps leading up to it. Unlike in south India, it doesn\u2019t usually have elaborate boundary walls or gateways. Earlier temples had only one shikhara (tower), but in the later periods, multiple shikharas came.
