That\u2019s why areas near the\u00a0equator are hot\u00a0and areas near the\u00a0poles are cold.<\/li>\n<li>So when Earth\u2019s\u00a0warmer air masses meet cooler air masses, the\u00a0warmer air rises up\u00a0higher in the atmosphere while\u00a0cooler air sinks down to replace the warm air.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This movement\u00a0creates an air current, or wind.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0jet stream is a type of air current that forms high in the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0located about five to nine miles above Earth\u2019s surface\u00a0in the mid to upper troposphere,\u00a0the layer of Earth\u2019s atmosphere where we live and breathe.<\/li>\n<li>Speed:\n<ul>\n<li>On average, jet streams move at about\u00a0110 miles per hour.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>But\u00a0dramatic temperature differences\u00a0between the warm and cool air masses\u00a0can cause jet streams to move\u00a0at much\u00a0higher speeds &#8211;\u00a0250 miles\u00a0per hour or faster.<\/li>\n<li>Since these hot and cold air boundaries are\u00a0most pronounced in winter, jet streams are the\u00a0strongest during both the northern and southern hemisphere winters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How Do Jet Streams Affect Weather?\n<ul>\n<li>They play a crucial role in\u00a0shaping weather patterns. They can\u00a0affect the movement of weather systems, such as high-pressure and low-pressure areas, and\u00a0influence the direction and intensity of storms.<\/li>\n<li>Storms tend to follow the edge of the jet stream,\u00a0where the difference between cool and warm air creates the turbulent conditions for storms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How Do Jet Streams Affect Air Travel?\n<ul>\n<li>Airplanes also fly in the mid to upper\u00a0troposphere.\u00a0So,\u00a0if an airplane flies in a powerful jet stream and they are traveling\u00a0in the same direction, the\u00a0airplane can get a boost.<\/li>\n<li>That\u2019s why an\u00a0airplane flying a route from west to east can generally make the trip faster\u00a0than an airplane traveling the same route from east to west.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an Air Mass?<\/h3>\n<p>An air mass is a large volume of air in the atmosphere that is mostly uniform in temperature and moisture.
