{"id":16299,"date":"2023-10-26T11:12:49","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T05:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16299"},"modified":"2025-04-04T08:20:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T02:50:17","slug":"indian-porcupine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-porcupine\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Porcupine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Indian Porcupine<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0large rodent native to Southern Asia and\u00a0the\u00a0Middle East.<\/li>\n<li>It belongs to the\u00a0Old World porcupine family, Hystricidae.<\/li>\n<li>Scientific Name:\u00a0<i>Hystrix indica<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Geographical Range: It is found throughout southeast and central Asia and in parts of the Middle East, including such countries as India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.<\/li>\n<li>Habitat:<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0mainly occurs on rocky hill sides but is\u00a0also found in\u00a0tropical\u00a0and temperate scrublands,\u00a0grasslands, and forests.<\/li>\n<li>They are also\u00a0found throughout the\u00a0Himalayan Mountains, reaching up to elevations of 2400 meters.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>On average, the Indian porcupine&#8217;s head and body measure\u00a070-90 centimeters (cm) in length, with a very\u00a0short tail and spines flowing from the forehead all over its\u00a0body.<\/li>\n<li>Weight: 10-20 kg<\/li>\n<li>Average\u00a0Lifespan: 18 to 20 years<\/li>\n<li>Quills: A porcupine\u2019s\u00a0best defense\u00a0is the formidable\u00a0set of quills on its back. But\u00a0it can\u2019t \u201cthrow\u201d them. When alarmed, the Indian Porcupine\u00a0launches its quill for a backward attack.\u00a0The quills\u00a0come loose and stick\u00a0to the skin, eyes, or mouth.<\/li>\n<li>Each\u00a0quill is brown or black\u00a0in color, with alternating bands of white.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0feet and hands are broad, with\u00a0long claws\u00a0that are\u00a0used for burrowing.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0nocturnal, with the species\u00a0seeking shelter in caves, between rocks, or in its burrow during the day.<\/li>\n<li>Diet: They have a very broad and\u00a0mostly herbivorous diet.
