


{"id":16307,"date":"2023-10-26T11:04:02","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T05:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16307"},"modified":"2025-04-04T08:23:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T02:53:26","slug":"alcalus-fontinalis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/alcalus-fontinalis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Alcalus Fontinalis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Alcalus Fontinalis<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0newly\u00a0discovered\u00a0species of frog.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0discovered\u00a0in\u00a0the Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li>The frog appeared to be a\u00a0mix of a bush frog and a water frog.<\/li>\n<li>The researchers used multiple lines of evidence using morphological, osteological, and molecular analysis, revealing they are no ordinary frogs but\u00a0members of a dwarf mountain frog of the genus Alcalus, hitherto\u00a0unknown from India.<\/li>\n<li>It was formally\u00a0named Alcalus fontinalis,\u00a0meaning \u201cspring or fountain,\u201d\u00a0referencing the tiny streams or brooks\u00a0where the frog was found.<\/li>\n<li>The new species\u00a0stands out from its congeners\u00a0due\u00a0to a\u00a0unique combination of\u00a0morphological features.<\/li>\n<li>These\u00a0include a snout-vent length of 27\u201328\u2009mm in males and 29.9\u201336.2\u2009mm in females, a disc on fingers and toes with a horizontal\/transverse groove on the dorsal surface,\u00a0wrinkled dorsal skin, and a\u00a0pair of faint dorsolateral stripes on the back.<\/li>\n<li>Key Facts about Namdapha Tiger Reserve<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0India\u2019s easternmost tiger reserve.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is located in the Changlang district of\u00a0Arunachal Pradesh, near the international\u00a0border with Myanmar.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The area is located\u00a0between the Dapha Bum ridge of the Mishmi Hills,\u00a0outspurs of North Eastern Himalayas and the Patkai Ranges.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was declared in the year 1983.<\/li>\n<li>Vegetation:\u00a0Evergreen Forests, Moist deciduous forests, sub-tropical forests, Temperate Forests and Alpine.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Climate:\n<ul>\n<li>The Namdapha Protected area,\u00a0being 27 degrees north of Equator, enjoys\u00a0a sub-tropical climate.<\/li>\n<li>However,\u00a0the climate of the area\u00a0varies from place to place\u00a0inside the protected area due to variations in altitude from 200 m to 4571m\u00a0and the area\u00a0also\u00a0being a\u00a0zone of heavy rainfall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Namdapha river:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Namdapha is, in fact, the name of a river\u00a0which originates from Daphabum and meets the Noa-Dehing River.<\/li>\n<li>This river flows right across the reserve in a North-South direction\u00a0and hence the name Namdapha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Flora: The Botanical Survey of India has recorded\u00a073 species of lichens, 56 species of Bryophytes, 110 species of Pteridophytes, 5 species of Gymnosperms, and 801 species of Angiosperms.<\/li>\n<li>Fauna:\u00a0Elephants,\u00a0Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Sun Bear,\u00a0Hoolock Gibbon (only Ape in India), Slow Loris, large herbivores such as\u00a0Goral, Serow, Sambar, Pig, and Malayan Giant Squirrel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is osteology?<\/h3>\n<p>Osteology means the study of bones and comprises studies of both human and animal material.
