{"id":16347,"date":"2023-10-27T09:14:10","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T03:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16347"},"modified":"2025-04-04T08:39:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T03:09:31","slug":"bering-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bering-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Bering Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Bering Sea<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0marginal sea\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0northernmost part of the\u00a0Pacific Ocean,\u00a0separating the continents of\u00a0Asia and North America.<\/li>\n<li>To the north, the Bering\u00a0Sea connects with the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Strait, at the\u00a0narrowest point of which the two continents are about 53 miles (85 kilometres)\u00a0apart.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0bordered by the\u00a0US state of Alaska to the east and northeast, the\u00a0Kamchatka Peninsula and the\u00a0Far Eastern region of Russia in the west, and the\u00a0chain of\u00a0the\u00a0Aleutian Islands in the south.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0boundary between the\u00a0United States and Russia passes through the sea\u00a0and the strait.<\/li>\n<li>The Bering Sea can be\u00a0divided into two equal portions: a\u00a0shallow area along the\u00a0continental shelf\u00a0in the\u00a0northern\u00a0and eastern parts of the sea, and a\u00a0deeper area in its southwestern part.<\/li>\n<li>The Bering\u00a0Strait is a relatively shallow passage, averaging 100 to 165 feet (30 to 50 metres) in depth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Canyons:\n<ul>\n<li>There are about\u00a016 submarine canyons in the Bering Sea.<\/li>\n<li>Situated\u00a0in the sea\u2019s\u00a0center\u00a0is a large underwater canyon known as the\u00a0Zhemchug Canyon. It is also the\u00a0world\u2019s largest and deepest\u00a0submarine canyon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Rivers: The two rivers that drain into the sea are the\u00a0Anadyr and the Yukon Rivers.<\/li>\n<li>Islands:\n<ul>\n<li>In addition to the\u00a0Aleutian and Komandor groups, there are several other large islands in both the sea and strait.<\/li>\n<li>These include\u00a0Nunivak, St. Lawrence, and Nelson islands in Alaskan waters and\u00a0Karagin Island in Russian waters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Springtime in the Bering Strait\u00a0brings one of the largest migrations in the world.\u00a0Each year,\u00a0millions of birds\u00a0and hundreds of thousands of\u00a0marine mammals follow retreating sea ice north through the Bering Strait.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are submarine canyons?<\/h3>\n<p>Submarine canyons are any of a class of narrow steep-sided valleys that cut into continental slopes and continental rises of the oceans. Submarine canyons originate either within continental slopes or on a continental shelf. They are rare on continental margins that have extremely steep continental slopes or escarpments.
