


{"id":16420,"date":"2025-02-04T10:41:08","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16420"},"modified":"2025-04-04T09:16:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T03:46:38","slug":"cardamom-cultivation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cardamom-cultivation\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardamom"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Cardamom Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>An international team of researchers have identified six species that are close cousins to Elettaria cardamomum, better known as green cardamom.<\/p>\n<h2>About Cardamom<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It belongs to the <strong>Zingiberaceae family<\/strong> and is popularly known as <strong>Queen of Spices.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is native to the <strong>evergreen rain forests of Western Ghats<\/strong> in South India.<\/li>\n<li>It is cultivated mainly in the Southern States viz; <strong>Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Required climatic conditions of Cardamom<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Soil:<\/strong> It is grown in <strong>forest loamy soils<\/strong> which are usually acidic in nature with a pH range of 5.0 \u2013 6.5<\/li>\n<li>This crop can be grown at an elevation from 600 to 1500 m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature:<\/strong> 10 to 35 degree C<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainfall:<\/strong> 1500 to 4000 mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Growth of cardamom is enhanced, when <strong>planted in humus rich soils<\/strong> with low to medium available phosphorus and medium to high available potassium.<\/li>\n<li>It is used as a flavoring agent and drug in traditional medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Newly Identified Cardamom Species<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the six, four were previously placed in a <strong>separate genus, Alpinia<\/strong>, while the remaining two have been newly identified and described from Kerala\u2019s Western Ghats regions.<\/li>\n<li>Following the reclassification, the genus Elettaria now has seven species, including <strong>Elettaria cardamomum.
