{"id":16428,"date":"2023-10-29T06:36:21","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T01:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16428"},"modified":"2025-04-04T09:19:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T03:49:46","slug":"ejecta-halo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ejecta-halo\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Ejecta halo?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>About Subsurface Water Ice Mapping (SWIM) project<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It aims to\u00a0locate the best places to access water ice buried under the\u00a0Martian surface.<\/li>\n<li>The recently released fourth set of map is the most detailed and accurate ones since the project started in 2017.<\/li>\n<li>It is led by the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, and managed by NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0project uses data from several NASA missions, such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), the 2001 Mars Odyssey, and the defunct Mars Global Surveyor.<\/li>\n<li>SWIM used two\u00a0higher-resolution cameras on MRO.<\/li>\n<li>The Context Camera data was used to improve the maps of the Northern Hemisphere.<\/li>\n<li>For the first time, the\u00a0HiRISE (High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) data was used to provide the most detailed view of the ice\u2019s edge as close to the equator as possible.<\/li>\n<li>The first phase of the SWIM project, completed in 2019, focused on the northern hemisphere. The second phase, completed in 2020 which include the southern hemisphere.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight of the new map\n<ul>\n<li>The new map includes sightings of so-called \u201cpolygon terrain,\u201d where the seasonal\u00a0expansion and contraction of subsurface ice causes the ground to form polygonal cracks, indicating more ice hidden beneath the surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter?<\/h3>\n<p>The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is a NASA spacecraft that has been in orbit around Mars since 2006.
