


{"id":16478,"date":"2023-10-30T05:53:54","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T00:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16478"},"modified":"2025-04-04T19:40:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T14:10:23","slug":"point-calimere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/point-calimere\/","title":{"rendered":"Point Calimere Wildlife sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Originally, UNIFIL was created\u00a0by the Security Council in March 1978 after Israel&#8217;s invasion of Lebanon.<\/li>\n<li>Mandate: According to Security Council\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unifil.unmissions.org\/sites\/default\/files\/old_dnn\/425.eda17afa-f25f-47e5-aad9-f83b9c690939.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">resolutions 425 (1978)\u00a0<u>and\u00a0<\/u>426 (1978)<\/a> of 19 March 1978, UNIFIL was established to:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Confirm the\u00a0withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.<\/li>\n<li>Restore\u00a0international peace and security.<\/li>\n<li>Assist the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/unifil.unmissions.org\/unifil-mandate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><u>The mandate<\/u><\/a> had to be adjusted twice, due to the developments in\u00a01982 and 2000.<\/li>\n<li>It has around\u00a010,500 peacekeepers coming from 48 troop contributing countries.<\/li>\n<li>The Mission maintains an intensive level of operational and other activities amounting to approximately 14,500 activities per month, day and night in the area of operations.<\/li>\n<li>Seventeen percent of activities are carried out\u00a0jointly with the Lebanese Armed Forces. UNIFIL is complemented by a\u00a0five-vessel Maritime Task Force.<\/li>\n<li>Funding: UNIFIL is funded through a separate account approved on an\u00a0annual basis by the General Assembly.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0part of UN Peacekkeing force.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About UN Peacekeeping Force<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>UN peacekeepers\u00a0provide security and the political and peace building support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace.<\/li>\n<li>Principles: UN Peacekeeping is guided by\u00a0three basic principles:\n<ul>\n<li>Consent of the parties;<\/li>\n<li>Impartiality;<\/li>\n<li>Non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Security Council has a vital role in securing this commitment and cooperation, while providing missions with realistic and clear mandates.<\/li>\n<li>There are currently\u00a012 UN peacekeeping operations deployed.<\/li>\n<li>For its services, UN Peacekeeping has also\u00a0received the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)?<\/h3>\n<p>The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement.
