The Mayan calendar is so precise that it even\u00a0<strong>includes a leap day adjustment<\/strong>\u00a0to keep the calendar synchronized with the solar year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Mayans created a system of hieroglyphic writing that includes more than\u00a0<strong>800 different glyphs.<\/strong>\u00a0This writing was\u00a0<strong>used to record the history, astronomy, mathematics<\/strong>, and religion of the Maya culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and\u00a0<strong>highly decorated ceremonial architecture,<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0<strong>temple-pyramids, palaces,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>observatories<\/strong>, all<strong>\u00a0built without metal tools.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They were also\u00a0<strong>skilled farmers,<\/strong>\u00a0clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce,\u00a0<strong>building sizable underground reservoirs<\/strong>\u00a0for the storage of rainwater.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Maya were equally\u00a0<strong>skilled as weavers and potters,<\/strong>\u00a0and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples.<\/li>\n<li>The Maya\u00a0<strong>made paper\u00a0<\/strong>from the inner bark of wild fig trees and\u00a0<strong>wrote their hieroglyphs on books<\/strong>\u00a0made from this paper.
